Bow Lights and Bow Roller questions

Does anyone know if someone sells a bicolor bow light or separate bow lights that can be mounted on the bow pulpit? My bow lights are so close to the front stay (and roller furler drum) I would not be able to install a bow roller unless I reposition the bow lights.

Has anyone installed a bow roller on a Cal 2-27?

Has anyone any experience using a Rocna anchor? Do you have it on a bow roller?

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

I managed to squeeze a medium sized bow roller between my nav lights and it just fits a 22 lb Rocna (I think the 33 lb Rocna would need a larger bow roller).

You're right though, that the bow roller does infringe a bit on the visibility of the nav lights and mounting the lights on the pulpit would be better.

I'll look for a pic or two to post.

This was our configuration for 20 years. Perko lights. It got them off the deck and outboard of the headsail.

Hopefully the link below works. It should lead you to pictures of my bow roller and Rocna 10 on my '78 Cal 2-27.

Thanks for the photos. Your bow looks just like mine although my PO put a solar powered fan behind where the roller furler drum is located. I may have to remove it or reposition the nav lights and mount the bow roller where one of the nav lights is located. Do you have any problems with deploying or retrieving the anchor with it slightly off the center?

Did you put any kind of shim under the bow roller to compensate for the raised rim on the bow?

I haven't had any problems at all with the off center (and slightly angled to starboard side) mounting. I did put some plastic "shims" made of StarBoard under the bow roller to level it out. I think you can see them stacked up if you zoom in on the fourth photo.

Well to install of the bow roller without too much problem. Now comes the next part, anchor setup.

What is your anchor rode setup? How many feet of chain vs line are you using? Where do you store the chain/line while sailing? Do you use 3 ply nylon or 8 plait? Do you have a pin that you insert into your roller to hold the anchor?

Thanks for the help.

Most of my anchoring is around Santa Cruz Island in 20 to 30 ft depth. I have 120 feet of 1/4 inch high test chain shackled to 200 feet of 3 strand nylon ( I have no windlass, so shackle is not a problem). For my typical depths I let out all 120 feet of chain and another 20 to 30 feet of rope as snubber. All rode goes through deck and is stored in bow.

CAL 2-30 Nav lights on the pulpit. Chain lock between bow roller and windlass. Bruce 33# anchor with 25' 5/16" chain spliced to 200' 8 plait feeds from windlass into anchor locker. Bow roller offset to port with 1000w Lewmar windlass controlled by deck switches or wireless remote. Works great. Anchored yesterday in 15' crystal clear water off Waikiki on a sandy bottom. :D
