FUEL TANK-CAL33-2---1987
What is the shape of the bottom of the fuel tank? Does it curve along the hull or is it several flat areas at different angles? Mine goes from 12" deep on the side closest to the center and 1/2" at the side closest to the port. Has anyone had a tank replaced and what did the whole job cost?

I have a Cal 34-3. From what you have stated, I assume the tank configuration is somewhat the same. The tank is not curved but made in straight pieces welded together in a rectangular shape with uneven sides.
There should be a “bed” in the boat where the old tank was positioned. The bed is usually a wooden frame fiberglassed into the hull. You do not want the tank to rest on the boat’s hull. There needs to be a space because condensation on the hull would lead to rusting the fuel tank.
Also, the bed helps hold the tank in place. Any tank movement could lead to a disaster. The tank MUST be securely fasten in the boat.
Most tanks are made from cold molded steel. The outside of the tank needs to be painted with a high quality rust prevention paint. However, the metal might differ if you have a gas engine instead of a diesel. A good sheet metal shop would know the best material for a tank.
You should take a lot of pictures and take measurements and then talk to sheet metal shops for assistance. Best to find a shop knowledgeable with boats. Probably, your best option (but not the cheapest) is to visit boat yards that work on boats.
Good sailing

I owned a 1986 Cal 33-2 and had the fuel tank cleaned. It is definitely a custom built tank for that model of boat and if you need to replace it you should remove it and give it to a metal worker to copy. The new owner put in a second fuel pickup for the diesel heater and the tank is in good shape. I am curious as to why you would need to replace the tank?

The tank has begun to leak. If anyone has the measurements or knows where to get them for a Cal 33-2 1987 please pass them on. It would save the cost of many Lay Days if the tank has to be pulled and measured before sending the measurements to a fabricator.
