Got to go for a lovely 6 hour sail around the bay and test out the new rigging, compression post and bulkhead a couple weeks ago. My boat is filthy from all the smoky forest fire air. Every time I wash it there's another fire. Now back at the dock with more projects.

Looks great! We are envious of all you have accomplished. Unfortunately for us I'm still fighting the effects of the Virus I picked up at the beginning of September... M.D. says no sailing, maintenance, or going to work . I feel like this poor guy.

Sorry you’re sick! I hope you’ll get cleared by the doctor soon. Thank you for the encouragement.

Not fair posting sailing photos when those of us on the inland seas have hauled our boats!! Looks like fun, even if the crew has to bundle up like it's winter and you have to sweep ashes off the deck.

Now that our sailing season is over I'm doing chores. Saturday, replaced the coolant in the truck. It's a Ford and the change interval is extended (100K then 50K later, and I stretched both a bit). But the temps were below 40 and after a while the fingers were aching from wet & cold. That's why I haul the boats before the last possible moment (i.e., before we have ice on decks).

My Cal 20 is snug under her winter cover. I can see our Bay from an office window and yeah, in the last couple weeks I've looked out to see lucky folks still sailing. Yesterday however I noticed that almost all the sailboats are gone, all save a couple big Beneteaus in the charter trade that will probably be bubbled all winter. The season is over here.

Ice on the deck? Where are you? I will probably continue to move down the coast until someday I retire and find myself in Costa Rica, the Caribbean or Brazil. I lived in Montana for four winters, and that was enough cold for me.

I'm in northern lower Michigan (Traverse City) and also have another boat on the other side of the state (Lake Huron), making me bi-coastal.

At some point the water becomes solid. Saginaw Bay, the large bay on Lake Huron, is shallow and freezes over, usually by early January but often earlier. Grand Traverse Bay, here on the Lake Michigan side, is very deep and less prone to freezing in these days of changed climate. They have long historical records (150+ years). Traditionally the Bay froze about 7 years per decade. Now it's maybe once per decade. One year we had perfect ice and I sailed my iceboat 7 mi. north. Could have kept going. That's rare. It does freeze in the shallow areas, including where the mooring for my Cal 20 lies. I put out a winter marker, a black plastic jug that I hope will act as a solar collector come spring, melting its own little hole to it isn't carried away when the ice sheet moves. That's the belt. The suspenders are the second float, this one on a short tether so it's below the surface in case the black jugs gets torn away.

One year somebody left their small boat, maybe 22', anchored out in the Bay. Ice and snow started accumulating on deck and it looked quite forlorn. Eventually law enforcement got involved and made the owner remove the boat. My personal views against the death penalty have an exception for people who neglect their boats.

By the way, my other boat, a Seafarer Polaris, is pictured in the letters section of the November, 2020 Practical Sailor magazine.

Such a beautiful place. I went to Traverse City many years ago to get my multi-engine airplane license. I loved the lakes.

Sometimes I forget what a privilege it is to live in a place where people come for vacations. And where I can ride my bike to work and then afterwards to the sailboat. The "to work" is year round but the "to the sailboat" is over for the year.
