If you can't or won't work on things yourself, you will be yard-whipped out=
of boating. I wouldn't recommend boat ownership to anyone who isn't prep=
ared to enjoy the hours spent tinkering with a boat.

I am so glad that I picked up my Cal 28 at a fire sale. Sure, it's got ple=
nty to keep me occupied. But it caused to me to locate and find this group=
, which is the liveliest interchange of owner ideas and support on keeping =
the old things going I have found. I also subscribe to the Capri 26 list,=
the Beachcomber 25 list, and the Willard list. Cal is the best!

and=20
we picked off the last place Catalina 42 as we rounded the b=

But we didn't think we'd done that well, overall. So when one =
dock=20
make offered us Brandy, and another invited us over for cheese, crackers =

Number 1 know your boat and its upwi=

ails=20
if properly sized and adjusted for the conditions. We have done it=20
fornbsp;many years.nbsp;You will increasenbsp;the amount of winnings=20
withnbsp;newer sails that are designed and functioning properly.nbsp;Th=

are manynbsp;adjustments that will tweak the cal 29 that have been alrea=

better lift until the wind increases to where you need to spill out some=

power. But younbsp;also need some of that power to pull you through the =

The oil issue is a concern as it make be think, does this guy know what he
is doing. I would pump out the oil, and replace it with fresh, at the right
level for your engine and at the operating angle recognizing that you will
not get it out. Put a magnet in the oil you collected to make sure there
are no filings in there.

The carb issue is one that requires action IMHO. Its theft. Do what you can
to get your carb back.

Wrt to costs...well I would raise that issue when I contact the company
requesting my carb back. Talk to the owner if at all possible rather then
the folks you have been. Be civil but determined

Check with a local mechanic or perhaps Joe D on these issues to get
confirmation, then deal with it accordingly.

Good luck.

I am having some problems figuring out if I am getting the truth from the g=
uy who just rebuilt my engine. =A0It started with him saying it would take =
2 days to ship the engine to him and having it take 2 weeks out and one wee=
k back. =A0Best I can tell, it took him a week to put the order in. =A0A we=
ek with him telling me it would be picked up that day (every day). =A0Calif=
ornia to New Jersey in 2 days seemed like a stretch so I allowed a week, no=
t two. =A0It didn#39;t help that the bill was over the quot;worst casequ=
ot; number by about $800. =A0New crank, new head, new starter, OK that is e=
xpensive so fair price for that stuff. =A0He shipped it back COD and told m=
e it would be $275 but it was $429. =A0He said the engine weight was 320 po=
unds but the freight company said 465 pounds. =A0Got the engine back and th=
e two sensors I asked to make sure were there didn#39;t make it back. =A0T=
he final quot;little thingquot; was that the carb that I made a special p=
oint saying was working so well I wasn#39;t even sure I wanted him to touc=
h it came was switched. =A0He said it was not switched and I would find my =
red paint under his black but I found green, indicating he didn#39;t even =
boil it out but just gave me another carb. =A0All this makes me wonder who =
I am dealing with.

But the real question comes with the fact that there is wate=
r dripping out the side of the engine between the head and the block. =A0He=
claims that is normal and will go away if I re-torque the head. =A0I never=
heard of such a thing and it didn#39;t go away torquing it cold, or hot b=
ut I have been told by someone else that I need to torque it cold after bei=
ng hot, something I can#39;t do until Monday when I return from a trip. =
=A0Should I believe him? =A0Do I have a non-issue or a serious problem. =A0=
I don#39;t know.

The final thing is that he says he ran it for 15 hours =
but I am wondering how it is that when I ran it for 15 minutes I had oil dr=
ipping out the cover plate on the trans. =A0Maybe he ran it flat and I have=
it at the normal angle in the boat so I am going with the possibility that=
there is an innocent=A0explanation. =A0There is about 1/4 quart too much o=
il in it (he put the oil in) which someone told me is a sign the engine was=
run flat (horizontal). =A0There is oil dripping from the bottom of the eng=
ine. =A0I sure hope it is from this cover plate leak and not a rear main se=
al. =A0Probable dripped down and under until it got to the back of the engi=
ne where it then dripped into the bilge.

Has anyone dealt with Dave? =A0Anyone think it is norma=
l to have water drip from a newly re built engine with a new head?Allen
