Our lonely Cal 2-25. She's currently on the hard for the winter.

If anybody else sees Good Old Boat magazine, you'll find a photo of my pretty Cal 20, No. 1220, Martha C, in the latest issue--together with my home-port buoy, "red 8." My boat is now on the hard for the winter, too.

Here on the Great Lakes, haul-outs are part of the seasonal cycle of life. And just as we hate to see summer leave, we tend to resist hauling out. I have come to realize that it's inevitable and just to do it. Then in the spring, days of labor in the cold boat barn are followed by the excitement of launch day.

My Cal 20 usually comes out in mid-Sept. She's on a mooring and exposed to fall storms from the north. I mostly sail her after work and the days get too short by then anyway. This year it was delayed until early Oct. because the marina guy got Covid, but I had partly de-rigged the boat and the weather was stinky anyway.

My other boat, over on the Lake Huron side, lives in a marina and so she comes out mid-Oct each year. Even in the protected marina, one year we had such high winds that they were nervous about unstepping the mast and she stayed until my Mom's birthday, Oct. 31. But again, in Michigan the weather can be unpleasant at that time of year so sailing is limited. The nice days are the ones when I have to be at work.

That other boat is even older than the Cal 20. She's a nice 1961 Seafarer Polaris, a 26' Bill Tripp keel/centerboarder built in the Netherlands. This was my 56th season sailing her and her 63rd season afloat. We're both old now.

Like us this day is old too. But it's still just as glorious.
