Glue holding depth readout to fiberglass?

I am in the process of replacing the original depth readout in my 1987 cal 33-2 and am having difficulty in removing the unit. It appears to be attached with some form of very strong glue. Is that true and if so what solvent might dissolve it without harm to the fiberglass? There does not seem to be any mechanical attachment other than the bracket which excerpts pressure to the interior.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Jim, If you could snap multiple pictures, different angles perhaps with some supplemental lighting. We might make some better informed suggestions. It is hard to believe that the P.O. would have epoxied the readout to the fiberglass but I have seen worse. We await some photos.
