I picked my 34-III up from the yard today! The bill almost killed me, but it was a dream to motor easily at 6.5 knots! It would go faster, but I’m not sure how high to run the RPMs on the Westerbeke 30.. I don’t have a tach.

The mechanic at the yard was excellent. He installed and aligned a new shaft with dripless, replaced motor mounts and found a piece of the exhaust pipe that needed to be replaced. I adjusted the transmission myself and it’s working fine. It’s so much easier to dock when the transmission works! I had to get the bottom painted again since it was out of the water for so long.

While I had it out, I asked them to add an Airmar DST 810 tri-ducer to add depth and boat speed that I didn’t have before. That completes the package with the B&G components I installed previously: Vulcan 9 chartplotter, WS320 Bluetooth wind vane, VHF/AIS and a Raymarine EV100 wheel autopilot. It was fun to play with the functionality and navigating to waypoints, auto tack etc. Now I want the autopilot remote controller. Too much fun.

I highly recommend KKMI in Point Richmond, California. Everyone there was professional and friendly. Kevin was my project manager. He used to own a Cal 34 himself. He is a low-stress guy who patiently answered all my questions and concerns and made the project run smoothly.

It’s going to be hot in the Bay Area. I can’t wait to spend it on the water!

Hey Mary

Congratulations getting the boat up and running. And, it sounds like you have added some great electronics. You mentioned about not knowing how high you can run the RPMs. That is question that have had for years. I have never been given a satisfactory answer, from prop shops to mechanics, or Westerbeke company, itself. Out of curiosity, you also mentioned a spend of 6.5 knots. Do you recall the RPMs at that speed and do you have a two or three bladed prop?

Thanks for the info

Did they rebuild your transmission or just replace the parts you mentioned? Cost ?

That's wonderful news Mary! I'm so happy you have your boat back and working. We're all looking forward to hearing the details. Do you think you might bring her down the coast this summer?

Thanks, Warren!

I have a Campbell Sailer 3 blade prop. I think it is around 12x9.

I got up to about 6.5 knots, noted the sound, then increased throttle and waited to see if I'd get more speed, which I didn't. I backed the throttle down to the lowest RPM that kept the speed. I've been going off of sound, since I don't have a tachometer. Also, I can tell by the way my BBQ (which is mounted on the stern railing) rattles what the RPM is :D

OK maybe I should install a tach.. and fix the rattling in the grill!

A different mechanic rebuilt the transmission. PM me about the cost. It was significantly more than they had quoted, but they did good work, and those things they fixed needed attention.

Thanks, Randy! The plan is to sail down when the winds settle. I am on the waiting list for Redondo, but will probably end up at Cabrillo in San Pedro first.

I took the ferry to Catalina a couple weeks ago for the first time, and now I'm even more excited to sail there!

Mary, I have heard of doing things "by the seat of my pants" but never by "the rattle of my BBQ". I wonder if the BBQ sound, and hence, your engine RPM might be influenced more by cooking steaks, chicken, or fish on the BBQ. You might be up to writing an article for a sailing magazine. This is great stuff.
