Hi, Larry here.

I've purchased a project for restoration. 1978 Cal34-III. My boat had no mast, damaged stanchions, bow pulpit, lifelines, etc when the mast came down at the dock in a storm. She has sat for years on the hard at this point.

I've started acquiring parts to rebuild her rig and update electrical and interior. I've been a power boater for a few years; this is my first sailboat, and I'm only passingly conversant with sailing principles and practices, but planning to take ASA lessons. I also attended the Rigger's workshop by Brion Toss in Port Townsend WA last year, and have his books (as well as some others).

Hi Larry, When I was working on upgrading this site, your post got lost, but I was able to restore it. Sorry for the trouble.

I have the same boat as you. Mine is also a project, but I enjoy it very much. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Mary...

Not sure how this profile will look. Apparently my profile got deleted in the move too, so I signed up again. The "Wilson740" in the username aboveis an artifact of the website migration.

Thanks Mary- no trouble at all. Having been a forum moderator before I know that these little foibles creep up now and then, and what a thankless job it can be as a hobby.

Speaking of thankless moderator jobs, thanks for making me a moderator here lol. I will try to help.

A little more about me;

My day job is for a large electric utility, where I work in Cyber/Physical Security & Compliance for the grid. I'm a USAF vet with various and sundry experience ranging from intelligence analyst/linguist in the Far East to computer/communications technology experience and a couple long stints as a DoD contractor in the Middle East (or SW Asia as we officially call it now.)

I've been a moderator on a number of firearms groups and was a moderator on the Seasteading forum before it went to Reddit. I'm very interested in Island and Off-Grid living.

Hello Larry G, ID like to Thank you for The Johnny dangerously reference .my son got sent to the principals office once for calling him an icehole .good luck with your Cal 34 .I had one for a while. I would start with the basics .the propulsion system then make sure the hull is in solid shape and be patient if you need a mast replacement just keep your eyes open, there’s probably a spare one somewhere on the West Coast good luck.
