Really nice photo--a happy man out sailing. What good fortune to have parents who went sailing!
Right above the desk where I'm typing this is a B&W photo of my sister, brother, a friend, and my Dad in my other boat, the one I've sailed for 54 seasons now. Dad is smiling, wearing his foulies (although the siblings are not). The photo is about 50 years old. The boat looks about the same but all the crew are much older, and Dad has been gone 16 years.
It's interesting seeing that photo of 5 folks out sailing. I'd have trouble rounding up 5 people for any extended activity today. Lives seem much busier. I figured out how to single-hand years ago when I realized that if i wanted to sail often, I'd have to do it by myself. One big lesson is that doubling the crew from 1 to 2 people makes sailing 10 times easier. If I had 4 other people with me the spinnaker would be flying all the time, and all those sail-shape controls would be fiddled with.
Cal 20 #1220, the lovely Martha C, goes in the water tomorrow. Way late, but the downstate folks with huge condo boats get first priority. Next year I'll try to schedule a launch date really early. Last night we had temps in the 40s and it won't get out of the 60s today, but tomorrow is sunny and 70s. Perfect day for launching!

That's how I remember Dad. Older, yes, but always full of that joyful enthusiasm. The picture is from 1937 headed back from Emerald Bay to the mainland. The boat was just launched that year. He ended up racing and sailing a M class and this boat for 16 years. Two of her sisters have been restored and are racing the classic boat series in Europe. She sits in a boat yard in Washington awaiting restoration. Alas, we come and go, but some of our boats carry on.
