I went to Moore Newton, a well known and impressive wood dealer in San Leandro, CA. They dug out a palette of rough cut teak and some alternatives.. the best alternative was African mahogany, but the teak is so much better, stronger, resistant to rot etc. I paid $265 for a 2”x12”x8’ board.
I took it back home to Santa Cruz and a woodworker helped me cut it. It is a beautiful piece of wood, and it was fun to see it become a new post. He sanded it and polished it with steel wool and it looks beautiful. I have some wood left over and can’t wait to fix some more things with it.
The man who helped me said that it looked like a piece of old teak; the good kind. It looked as if it had been sitting on that palette for decades.
I think I will treat the ends with penetrating epoxy, and test another area to see how it will turn out if I do the whole thing. The stuff I got from Total Boat soaks in quite well if you mix in acetone.
