can I stay even tho the Cal 2-29 is up for sale?
jeribelle20002005-10-31 22:01
I've mentioned previously here that our Cal 2-29 is up for sale,
located in Anacortes, an hour from the San Juan Islands. We've got our
larger digs, a 42 Morgan sloop (not the out islander model) coming
Friday, we hope. After inspecting and replacing/repairing what needs
done on the bottom and up on the stick, we'll launch it and move
aboard.
I've gotten a lot of useful information over the last few years from
this list, not all of which is Cal-specific. That is why we hope to
stay here lurking at least, if it's ok with the rest.

Cal 40 Tanks (for the memories) -- Mike Kennedy
Rog Jones2005-10-31 22:13 UTC
Hi, Mike -
Anyone with cash could get modifications like the one you describe from the
factory. There's really no way to tell if the mod was done there or added
later.
I know a lot about smelly bilges, having just pulled a leaky waste holding
tank out of the 2-30. Gaaaaaaaaack. Much bleach and a lot of other efforts
later, it is really nice in there, now. With the dismal state of our oceans,
I refuse to dump ANYTHING overboard, so a good waste system is really
important to me.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to everyone being over at Yahoo. This is
confusing to an old f - - t like me. Anyway, happy Halloween to all you that
remain here.

Well, here goes.
We had a great sail this weekend (despite boat work) and just got back to
the news from Sam and Cheryl. Hmmmm.
MIke Jr and I pulled the auxiliary fuel tank from the bilge this weekend.
What a job ! It had to have been installed when the boat was built. Roger,
did any other Cal 40s have a racing tank installed in the bilge aft of the
ballast ? We assumed it was a racing tank put in by a previous owner but it
was too big to go in or out. We had to cut it up with a Sawzall. The bilge
already smells better. The old engine had an oil leak and everything under
it was permeated with oil and stunk.
Sadly, I don't get any value from the other SailJazz features apart from the
list and the .ftp, all of which are available at no cost in very good form
on Yahoo and other services.
I still don't understand the business plan. I bought quite a bit of stuff
from Sailnet and don't understand why they failed. Sailjazz seems to be a
t-shirt business (sorry, I don't mean to offend) and I assumed they had
plans for a business expansion. I also think a nominal fee might have flown.
An annual subscription when nobody knows how long they will be doing this is
a bit much. Additionally, I had two accounts so I could post from work. I'm
not about to pay twice. I inquired and got no answer.
The Boyles have tried very hard and are to be commended, but I do not feel
that their business model makes any sense. Thanks to both of them for all
they've done to this point. However, they didn't ask opinions about
perceived value from any listees before making the decision to move to fee
basis. The question is this: What is the perceived value here that cannot be
had elsewhere for a lower cost or at no cost? Good marketing folks would
have asked that question first and the Boyles failed to do so. Sorry Sam and
Cheryl, but the move to a fee-based list isn't logical and your method of
getting from here to there defies normal marketing practice.
I have to agree.

Well of course, Jeri!!!
This is a family. We don't want to lose anybody. Besides, next time I'm up
your way to visit my mom and my friend Jim Betts who builds (really great)
boats there, I will have to drop by and see the new Morgan!
