Changes in latitudes
Rog Jones2005-11-02 15:11 UTC
Hiya, gang -
Now that a lot of us are here, we are hearing that Sailnet is coming back up
and that some are going to continue to post to or at least lurk there or on
SailJazz or both.
Seems we ought to decide where the group is going to hang out as a primary
"home port" so that we can all consistently share information and ask
questions about our boats, activities and ideas. The concern is that if you
have to follow three or four lists (counting Sailboatowners), it is just too
much trouble and some of us will simply drop out or hit the delete key.
Personally, I advocate for Yahoo, despite having a warm place in my heart
for the work that the Boyles did on Sailnet and SailJazz. They are good
technical people, but I am not impressed with their business and people
savvy.
The Yahoo site seems to have a more user-friendly interface - when I was in
the software business, we called it a "seductive" interface. It allows
people to post pictures more easily and to manipulate the photos and
information (see the files folder) related to their own boats. It also is
free, meaning that there is no financial bar to new members. Also, Yahoo is
less likely to make changes without asking and doing solid market research -
Yahoo Groups has been around for a long time, now, and is very stable. This
stability means that we will have continuity and not constantly be in danger
of losing important information like that posted to the SailJazz and Sailnet
ftp servers. As a footnote, it will be interesting to see if Sailnet
restores the ftp data we had placed there. If it does, I plan to copy it all
to another server as a backup. (Note to Tom Tilley: do you have a copy of
the data we moved from Sailnet to SailJazz?)
Some of the information on the ftp servers is probably gone forever. That
concerns me, because the content belongs to the original posters, not to
SailJazz or Sailnet. Many of the original posters are not around anymore or
don't even own Cals. But their information is useful, particularly, that
from Brian Cleverly. So we need to find a way to archive and protect all of
the ftp info. I may have a line on another secretly made copy of the ftp
files shortly before Sailnet folded.
Anyway, please chime in and add your thoughts. It would be nice for us to
come to a decision here and then stick with it. I will go with the
consensus, but only with one site.

Actually, this is a beta site. I found that you can edit the information by
simply posting over it once you have it displayed. I replaced a photo with
another one and changed the "shout."

In response to Rog's email, I'll continue to lurk on SailJazz, but I won't pay for a membership. Our ftp files are gone from Sailnet, but they're still on SailJazz, and I'm downloading as many as I can and will put them on a CD. I hope someone else will do the same. Perhaps they can be restored at Yahoo. Maybe Bob Walden has some thoughts.
In the end, I think we should go to Yahoo for our listserve.

I second you Rog.....at some point Sailjazz or Sailnet will start to charge or sell out, no matter what they say.
I vote for Yahoo.

Now that a lot of us are here, we are hearing that Sailnet is coming back up and that some are going to continue to post to or at least lurk there or on SailJazz or both.
Seems we ought to decide where the group is going to hang out as a primary home port so that we can all consistently share information and ask questions about our boats, activities and ideas. The concern is that if you have to follow three or four lists (counting Sailboatowners), it is just too much trouble and some of us will simply drop out or hit the delete key.
Personally, I advocate for Yahoo, despite having a warm place in my heart for the work that the Boyles did on Sailnet and SailJazz. They are good technical people, but I am not impressed with their business and people savvy.
The Yahoo site seems to have a more user-friendly interface when I was in the software business, we called it a seductive interface. It allows people to post pictures more easily and to manipulate the photos and information (see the files folder) related to their own boats. It also is free, meaning that there is no financial bar to new members. Also, Yahoo is less likely to make changes without asking and doing solid market research Yahoo Groups has been around for a long time, now, and is very stable. This stability means that we will have continuity and not constantly be in danger of losing important information like that posted to the SailJazz and Sailnet ftp servers. As a footnote, it will be interesting to see if Sailnet restores the ftp data we had placed there. If it does, I plan to copy it all to another server as a backup. (Note to Tom Tilley: do you have a copy of the data we moved from Sailnet to SailJazz?)
Some of the information on the ftp servers is probably gone forever. That concerns me, because the content belongs to the original posters, not to SailJazz or Sailnet. Many of the original posters are not around anymore or dont even own Cals. But their information is useful, particularly, that from Brian Cleverly. So we need to find a way to archive and protect all of the ftp info. I may have a line on another secretly made copy of the ftp files shortly before Sailnet folded.
Anyway, please chime in and add your thoughts. It would be nice for us to come to a decision here and then stick with it. I will go with the consensus, but only with one site.

Thanks for taking your time to grab those files, Jim.
It would be terrible to lose all that information. Much of the brochure
information is impossible to recreate.
Can anyone else who has the time make an effort to download and store the
ftp data from SailJazz?
Then possibly we can get you all to put it back up on Yahoo in the photos
and files sections.
Thanks to everyone who is participating in this archival effort.

I agree about Yahoo. I'm on another Yahoo group list and it functions
very well, allowing for easy exchange of information and genrating
inquiries from new people all the time. Actually, I'm on several Yahoo
groups and they all work that way. There's the occasional minor
annoyance of ads but I tolerate that, being good with the delete key &
the mouse.
It's important to focus on one site for this, so we all have the benefit
of a wide range of questions, information, advice, and knowledge.

The Sailjazz ftp files were backed up immediately when I became aware of the pending move and I had been taking regular downloads/updates of the site just to make sure that we didn't lose everything if a calamity struck again.
There has been a LOT of content added since the backup of the Sailnet files.

You are obviously prescient. Thanks to much for foreseeing this and taking

I am going to see if Ward Osborne (former listee) still has his server
available as an ftp site. He offered it at no charge some time ago and it
can't hurt to ask. If not, I'll try to find a server where we can
permanently park the ftp system.
If anyone else on this list knows of an available server at no cost, please
let me and Tom Tilley know.
Time we began protecting this valuable archive of information about our
