Well, now isn't this just something! Seems a dollar short and a day late to
me.

Hi,
I'm writing to tell you that SAILjazz is modifying the subscription plan.
Based on the responses we received, we're electing to dramatically reduce
the editorial content on the site. There is no point in delivering a
product that people do not want. In turn, we are also reducing the annual
subscription to $12. ..........

The Boyles have emailed everyone that they are "modifying the subscription
plan."
What's everyone think?

And Sailnet Lists are back! Congrats to the new owners. They are a few weeks late, since the list has pretty much moved here, and then there's that other $ list.

I agree. They're reducing the fee, but eliminating editorial content.
That means you get to pay for the privilege of having ads pitched at
you. I think the free, functional Yahoo group remains the way to go.
I've been participating in a Yahoo group on a rather obscure topic--FM
tuners--for a couple years now. It's trouble-free. New people find
it. No problems.

Yahoo!!! (As in, let's stay with a site that's going to be there next
week). My experience with Yahoo groups has been uniformly good. The
time has come to stop jumping from one site to the next. Yahoo is free,
functional, and stable. I've participated in an FM tuners group for a
couple of years and it works well and can be found by new people.

I'd like to stay with Yahoo. I have been subscribed for some time to a
couple other yahoo groups, and they are virtually trouble free. I also
like having all my group activity in one spot, viewable online, rather
than in my mailbox, especially when we are out cruising and don't check
mail for days on end.

The current trajectory at Sailjazz seems expected by most, and already included in my decision about moving. The comments about people and business skills, and the apparent indifference toward the fates of their groups still seem valid. Its a bit painful, yes?
Sailnet is back, but as a ward of a for-profit business. If it doesn't produce the expected market for them, how long would it take to become neglected or change hands? I think as long as its possible to remain free and accessable (as in Yahoo), thats best.

It's unfortunate that the Boyles killed the goose that laid the golden
eggs, but they have. I'm sorry for them, and I would have stayed with
them had they marketed their fee system more intelligently, but they
didn't. Having now been exposed to Yahoo, and seeing the group's
satisfaction with it, I'm in no hurry to go back.
