Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal Boats 29-36 ft--Need Some Advice
Travis, I was in the same dilemma a few years ago. I wanted a boat that was
sporty enough to be competitive for beer can racing and yet would be
comfortable on weekend cruises to the Channel Islands. With my slip having a overall
limit of 31 feet my options were limited to upgrading only 3 feet from my
Catalina 27. I too had my heart set on owning a Cal. I have a friend with a Cal
29 so I was looking hard at maybe owning one of those wonderful boats. They
are known as the biggest 29 footer around and hold their own on the race
course. One day while searching on Yachtworld.com I saw a Cal 9.2 and had not heard
of such a boat, so some inquiries were made (to this list for one) and found
out that the 9.2 is one of the few Cal's not designed by Bill Lapworth, but
was designed by Ron Holland and licensed to build here in the United States.
I liked what I saw and read, so I flew to Florida to check one out. After all
is said and done, I am very happy with my decision to buy one. They do very
well on the race course and are great on weekend getaways. I would suspect
others will chime in here raving on their 29's,30's,31's and 34's as well
they should, they are all great boats. Good luck finding the one that fits your
wants/needs.
