Hi! The Cal 40 restoration must be a huge task. I get the picture. bought a
cal 29 in needy shape for $6000 in 2000 and in 2005 I sometimes wonder what
I did over the last 5 years. But looking back, despite the $$$ I have never
done anything more rewarding as a sailor and I may say as a woman who tinkers
in such things. Check my basics - I have a log of improvements that boggles
and pleases my mind. Keep it up - these boats are great!

Good job. The after pictures look great.
I had to replace the engine, v-drive, shaft , log, and prop plus the
mast and rigging. That got the bill up really fast. I had planned to
refinish the mast and rerig it but that lasted until we got it
stripped and looked at the corrosion. Seafire just lost their
rerigged mast so I'm feeling better about the decision.
The interior wasn't as bad as the one you had but just about
everything had to be redone anyway. The bulkheads are OK and the beam
looks OK. I may replace the chainplates if I go in the 2007 Transpac.
The wiring looked like something a spider would do. I re-wired the
whole boat. Replumbed with a new water and holding tank. I might
sneak a water heater in somewhere my son can't find it.
The next nasty job, once the interior is livable and I'm almost
there, is the toe rail.
The other problem is my 40 year old son who gets hysterical about any
added weight. Of course, he does this from Oakland. What he can't see
won't hurt him. He plans a long racing career once I'm no longer
around. Of course my mother lived to 103.
