We tack when the depth finder reads 8 feet because we want to stay away from the deep water. <g> (A few more comments about the mineral oil and transducer. Ours is a fish-finder type, and finds fish just fine. And the mineral oil went in about 6 or 7 years ago, and is still working fine. No evaporation, so we haven't had to even top it off.) The hull should be solid, the decks are cored. There are others here who know more than I do but few boats have core below the waterline. If they are cored, it is usually deck and hull above the waterline. J Boats have a cored hull as many catamarans as well. The industry is moving in this direction with new composites and weight savings. My favorite is a big fat fiberglass hull that can with stand most speed bumps. Rich

Michael, Definitely solid glass. I had a depth transducer out last spring. You may find that the thickness varies over the opening. The transducer was opposite the head seawater intake under the vee-berth. The hull was about 3/16" thicker closer to the centerline.
