Well that last post was supposed to go to Roger Jones' private mailbox, but
the sentiments are worth sharing with all of you and so now may I extend the
same Holiday wishes to all of my friends on the Cal List.
The many of you that I know and consider friends from our faceless medium,
and those of you that I've had the privilege to meet and enjoy in person.
Don't pass through Santa Barbara without looking me up!

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 46 for sale - Owners view of a Cal 46
Tom Vandiver2005-12-26 10:16 UTC
Seasons Greetings to all Cal Boaters,
Having owned Cal Crusing 46, Satori, hull #3 since
March 1982, lived aboard since May 1988, cruised from
Long Beach, CA, 2 years in Mexico, Costa Rico &
Panama, then through the canal, sailed non stop to
Mobile,AL,400 miles up the Tenn Tom, back down,
Bahamas, back to Bayou Chico to replace fuel tanks,
then three years in the Caribbean and north side of
South America, back to Bayou Chico, Cuba in 1998,
Bahamas in the winter of 2001, summer up the ICW to
Chesapeake, then back to the bayou, where we still
live aboard at our dock behind our house. We only stay
in the house when we haul out. We are full time care
givers for Bobbie's Mom, who lives in our house, so
our cruising plans are temporarily on hold.
After 17 years of living aboard our Cal 46, we are as
happy as we were the first day. Almost everyone
exclaims about how well laid out and comfortable our
boat is. While the profile is somewhat different, with
a pilot house and cockpit forward and large deck aft,
it has been perfect for our use. I am 6'3" tall and
have standing headroom everywhere down below,
including the walk around engine room. We carry a 12'
aluminum skiff, with 15HP outboard on the aft deck,
using the aft anchor windlass and boom to lift in on
and off.
Our engine room houses our Perkins 4-236, 90 HP
diesel, Yanmar 5KW genset, 20GPH watermaker, 50 gallon
fuel,day tank,
(2- 175 gallon fuel tanks are forward under the wheel
house, this gives us over 2,000 mile range under power
as we average 1.1 gallon per hour at 1550 RPM's at 6.2
knots, clean bottom,calm seas)
I have a stainless steel covered work bench with a
vise in the engine room. While cruising I carry my
fuel injector tester and rebuild/calibrate other
cruisers fuel injectors, when those services are not
available locally.
I could go on and on, but will gladly reply to any
questions about the Cal Cruising 46 of which less than
twenty were built.
Satori and Jack'a Hearts, Richard and Charlie Birge's
Cal 46 are neighbors on Bayou Chico, so if anyone is
really interested in Bill Lapworth's Merrydown, go
after it as I have already told several people who
have been pestering me about buying Satori.
We were married aboard Satori off Long Beach May 15,
1982, are still happily living aboard which we intend
to untill its time to slip over the side in a shroud.
