Cal 37 project
mtkennedy12005-12-31 16:59
Roby Bessent, a TPYC Director and boat surveyor, is restoring a Cal 37 named Intrepid II. It
was a tough competitor when owned by Barry Berkus in the 70s. It has a bowsprit, now
lying in the boatyard next to the mast. Roby took off the toe rail and glassed over the hull-
deck joint up to the shroud chain plate. He's going to put a perforated toe rail on the bow
over the original hull-deck joint.
The Cal 37 is a Cal 40 with 3 feet cut off the stern. There were about 6 of them built and
Thunderbird, which won the Bermuda Race in 1966, was converted to a 37 later. There is
no lazarette hatch and the stern is only a couple of feet beyond the cockpit coaming. The
most interesting change Roby is making is to put the engine, a 3 cylinder diesel, in the
bilge where most 40s had the water tank.
This mounting allows a straight shaft run to a prop in an aperture in the keel. He has a
moulded piece that goes aft of the prop to close the aperture. The shaft looks too long
now but they may pull it in to connect when the engine is installed.
The bottom had a blister problem that is fixed now although Rog may want to take a look
when he is down here next month. I posted some pictures of the project on my photo site.
The album is called Cal 37. Pretty interesting project.

An engine in the bilge probably means, like with a Mason 43, he will have to react even more quickly to any emergency where water gets inside the boat.

This is an excellent point although the 40 has a deep sump that is pretty large. The Cal 37
keel looks shorter to me and I think the sump may be smaller and affected by the aperture
for the prop. I didn't look at that area. I think it's a pretty interesting project and I plan to
fix my deck-hull joint in the near future so wanted to see the work before it's painted.
He's planning to get the hull painted soon and it will look a lot better. He also wants to sail
in the 2007 Transpac in the Cal 40 class. The modification will get the weight centered
very well although I'm not as sure that this is so important in down wind surfing. It's
critical in choppy water and light air when keeping the pitching moment low will keep the
boat going.
There are others here who know more about that than I do.
