MacOSX compatible navigation software
Michael Birch2006-01-03 05:55 UTC
Hi All,
I don't know how many mac users there are in the
group. I know that Alfred is and so am I, but I don't
use mine for navigation yet. I can't bear the thought
of putting my PowerBook in a less than dry situation.
Anyway, I was reading Boat U.S. Magazine and came
across a response to an article by Rich Ray in San
Francisco. He wrote about a Mac compatible marine
navigation software that supports RNCs (Maptech,
Softcharts, NOAA) and ENCs (NOAA). You can get MacENC
a full feature charting application for MacOSX at:
www.macenc.com
I went to the website out of curiosity and the
software looks interesting. It seems to do all the
things you would want (raster, vector, photo, and
weather overlays) and they have usb 2 serial
connectors for hooking up your gps to a mac. Maybe
someone with more experience can take a look and give
a more definative review. They have 2 different
versions. GPSNavX for $59.95 is the lite version
which I believe does't have real time charting
capability and the full version MacENC for $99.95.
Seems like a reasonable price.
Also, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you
sailors and sailorettes from the not so frozen (at the
moment) midwest.

I use the Mac and have a couple of powerbooks that I don't want to have moisture issues
with either. Remember that Apple is coming out with an Intel based Mac very soon. I don't
know how that will affect cost but it might. Some Mac gurus, like Leo Laporte, are
suggesting that anyone thinking of buying a Mac wait a month or two to see what
happens. I don't know if they will include powerbooks.
I'll take a look at the site when I get home. Thanks for the tip.

Hi all,
Speaking of MacOSX... has anyone ran across navigation software for a Linux system? Since Linux
does not require the latest hardware, one could use an obsolete/cheap laptop and not have the
concern for ruining an expensive piece of hardware.
