Peggy and Bill Lapworth (was RE: [Cal_Boats] Cal 46 for sale (Chas))
Rog Jones2005-12-24 15:28 UTC
Hi, Charlie and all -
The last time I saw Bill, he told me that he was looking forward to getting
the 46 out again as soon as Peggy recovered her strength. Somehow, we both
knew this wasn't in the cards. Peggy and my Lori talked for a couple of
hours about the Lapworth's adventures on the boat and how much Bungee and
Dory (their dogs) liked to sail with them. Meanwhile, in his office, Bill
and I discussed the merits of the various iterations of the 46, and Bill
insisted that the original was by far the most cruising friendly. I looked
at Bill and knew that he was slipping away, but just couldn't bring myself
to face it head on.
With Merrydown donated, I am sure that Bill is mentally gone and with
Alzheimer's the rest doesn't take much longer - a year to 18 months at the
most.
Peggy and I spoke a couple of times as recently as July and she was going
through a lot of heartache and uncertainty. Her daughter and son-in-law were
taking over the family business activities and trying to arrange for in-home
care for Bill. Not easy things to do, because Alzheimer's victims often
become pretty surly about giving up their independence. Bill certainly was
in that category.
Peggy really didn't want to go into detail and I decided not to bother her
again unless asked. I sent Peggy a letter last week with our annual
Christmas card, telling her how grateful all of us who worked for Jensen
Marine were for the partnership that Jack and Bill had that gave us all such
good jobs in such a great working environment. I reminded her how much their
boats had meant to all of us who own or sail on them and let her know that
Lori and I are here if needed. That's about the best we can do.
Each one of us who has a Cal boat should know that it is the product of a
collaboration of two truly amazing minds and the hands and hearts of many
wonderful engineers, craftsmen and skilled laborers. Time has shown that
these boats are far from perfect. But they were the best design,
workmanship, and materials available at the time.
Knowing that Merrydown is on the block is hard for me. I don't know if St.
Lori will allow me to make a run at her - owning two Cal's and with a new
one on the drawing boards, it would take a lot of patience for her to deal
with it. But I do know that Merrydown means a great deal more than just the
fact that Bill and Peggy loved her so much. It is the end of an era and the
beginning of a new one.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my friends on this list.
\Rog
P.S. Bill and Peggy said their very favorite Cal was the 29.

I saw him in March when I was starting on the Cal 40 history and Rog
set up an interview. He looked great and was friendly and personable.
He had no memory, however. In our discussion, he could remember
emotions but not exactly the facts that went with them. He laughed
about the engineer's impression of the tank tests of the 40 and 36
when they were in design but couldn't tell me what the issues were.
He was annoyed with a former owner who owned a TV station but did not
recall Ted Turner's name. Rog has since told me that he really
disliked Turner (Who has not responded to requests for material for
the book) but I didn't learn why.
This is pretty typical of early Alzheimers. I don't know how he is
now. It's really sad and is extra sad for me because I started on
this too late to talk to him when he could still remember.

Roger,
Thanks for the update on Bill Lapworth, and sharing the tragic nature of your personal time with him. I can think of no more terrible thing for a wife or husband to face and my heart goes out to Peggy.
So all the best to you, Lori and all of yours. I hope 2006 offers an opportunity to sail together again.

Peggy and Bill Lapworth's Cal 46 -- help wanted
Rog Jones2005-12-27 15:48 UTC
Hi, gang -
Spoke with Steve "Cap'n Crunch" Smith at the Deltaville Virginia Maritime
Museum this morning. He told me that the museum has an offer and a deposit
on the boat for $34,000. The deal is that whoever buys the boat has to leave
the title in the name of the museum for two years and provide insurance. The
deposit serves as the charter fee and then at the end of two years the title
goes to the buyer. This is to satisfy IRS donation requirements. The museum
was going to carry (finance) everything over the deposit amount. The
ultimate proceeds go to the museum's family wooden boat building summer
program. This is a great deal for the buyer, but a real screwing for the
museum.
Because I run a non-profit that serves kids, I can't stand to see them lose
money that should go to doing good things that relate to kids, sailing and
boat building - my three great passions, after St. Lori, of course. Steve
has known Bill Lapworth for many years, but he doesn't realize the value of
the boat and its history. The lack of sophistication is scary.
I suggested to him that he should contact a local broker and get the boat
listed on Yacht World. I also suggested to him that he contact the editors
of Soundings and Sail Magazine and ask them to help out with small articles
about Merrydown (Hull #1, Bill and Peggy's 46) and its history and let
people know they can buy a piece of sailing history.
The boat is sitting in dry storage and has been for four years. There is
some interior water damage because those lousy little cockpit drains Bill
designed are clogged and the cockpit has been full of water. Some ran down
the companionway into the cabin and damaged some of the interior woodwork
(the liquor locker). The cockpit-coaming teak is peeling and in need of
repainting. The boat is full of Bill and Peggy's personal effects and
papers. The bottom shows signs of early stage blistering, meaning that it
would have to be peeled, repaired and barrier-coated. Even so, there are Cal
46s in far worse condition going for seventy grand.
If there is somebody in the area of Deltaville, I'd really like to beg you
to butt in here and help these people get what that boat is worth. It would
be neat if perhaps someone could organize a work party to clean the boat up
a bit cosmetically so that it will photograph well and help them get it
listed with a broker who would donate back his sales commission to the
museum. Steve says he has such a broker on his board, so all that would be
needed would be a few dedicated Cal folks to help this little museum and its
boat-building program get the full value from this boat.
The cost to ship the boat to the West Coast is about $7,500, so if we can
help these guys, I will also see if I can convince Latitude 38 (the big West
Coast sailing publication) to do a story as well.
If you can and live in the area, please help out.
Thanks.

This such a cruel way to go, because the victim loses the things that
really matter, his connections with the world and people, and because it
is not swift.

Looking at my beloved little Cal 20, I never have a sense that there was
any focus on distracting the buyer with irelevancies. It is a good
small boat, and obviously designed to perform well at a given price.
For more money, there are many things that might have been improved, but
then so many people would have been unable to own and sail the boats.
It is otherwise with many products. Examine much of the stuff we are
pressed to buy today, and you see the heavy hand of the marketing dept.
making decisions. I recently bought a lightly used 4-cyl. Ranger pickup
to replace one that was 13 years old. The dealer printed out the
original list of standard and optional features. Standard things
included the "power dome hood." (Well thank goodness. I would sure
hate to be seen driving in a truck with some wimpy hood.) I don't spot
the nautical equivalent of the "power dome hood" on the Cal 20.
Everything on the boat is related to its job of sailing efficiently and
safely.

If you're not familiar with /Good Old Boat/ magazine, you should be.
You could be writing technical articles and historical ones for them
without breaking a sweat. It would benefit the sailing world and put a
few bucks in your pocket.
But apropos of the current topic, a letter to the editor containing the
same info as your e-mail would be a good way to alert the used boat
crowd to the availability of a boat with good design characteristics and
important provenance. They've also got a web site that might be helpful
in getting word out.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Peggy and Bill Lapworth's Cal 46 -- help wanted (Chris C)
Rog Jones2005-12-27 18:18 UTC
Whoops, that should have been "know them well."
Just spoke with Karen and I'm going to send her a bit for the February
newsletter.
Will again ask anyone in the Chesapeake Bay area who might be able to help
these folks get a good owner for this boat to please contact me and let's
put together a strategy.
Thanks again, Chris.

If you're not familiar with Good Old Boat magazine, you should be. You
could be writing technical articles and historical ones for them without
breaking a sweat. It would benefit the sailing world and put a few bucks in
your pocket.
But apropos of the current topic, a letter to the editor containing the same
info as your e-mail would be a good way to alert the used boat crowd to the
availability of a boat with good design characteristics and important
provenance. They've also got a web site that might be helpful in getting
word out.

Hi, gang -
Spoke with Steve "Cap'n Crunch" Smith at the Deltaville Virginia Maritime
Thanks.

They have NOT accepted any offers, Scott. My hope is that they get someone
to buy this boat who will be able to put a couple bucks into her. From what
I've heard, it looks like bringing her back to pristine condition will be
about a $25,000 job, unless a person has the skills and can do it all
oneself. My hope is that someone who buys this boat will have the interest
and the money to do a good job with her and keep her up for future
generations.
Annual cost to maintain a boat like this in prime condition under
PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE (not do-it-yourself) will be about $10,000
including slips fees, maintenance, insurance, etc. Some folks won't find
that any big deal.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Peggy and Bill Lapworth's Cal 46 -- help wanted (Scott S)
Scott Sauvageot2005-12-27 21:08 UTC
I don't mind working on projects myself. I restored a much smaller vessel
(Cal 25) and could probably tackle just about anything except the engine
myself. If I get her, I plan to make her my home, so the annual upkeep
wouldn't be too bad.
It would be nice to have such a significant piece of Cal history continue to
be used as she was intended, as a live aboard cruiser.
Cheers,
Scott

Rog,
Mentioned this to my friend Steve Alexander who is regional 'commodore' of Seascouts in our area, and who receives and sells boats of all sizes constantly. He insists the two-year wait to satisfy the new IRS requirements is a common misreading of the provisions. To remedy this problem, he has submitted an extensive letter to the IRS with expectations that it will become incorporated as a marine counterpart of their existing automotive guidelines. In it, he details various examples of 'significant use' that validate the donation on their terms. (One of which may be ownership for as little as 6 months.) The two year requirement pertains to submitting form 8282 with a copy to the donor. Whoever is corresponding with the Museum should suggest that they look at the requirements again. If they would like to contact Steve, I will send them his email address. This issue has plagued scout groups up and down the East Coast, and may needlessly complicate the Museum's actions.

Spoke with Steve Capn Crunch Smith at the Deltaville Virginia Maritime Museum this morning. He told me that the museum has an offer and a deposit on the boat for $34,000. The deal is that whoever buys the boat has to leave the title in the name of the museum for two years and provide insurance. The deposit serves as the charter fee and then at the end of two years the title goes to the buyer. This is to satisfy IRS donation requirements.

John -
Can you ask Steve Alexander to email me a copy of his letter? Sierra Nevada
Community Sailing, the non-profit St. Lori and I founded here in Reno,
receives extensive donations and we do our best to comply with the IRS
requirements. Our CPA is a tax attorney as well and he is about to make a
similar submission. Steve's letter would be useful so that we are all
singing the same song.
We teach hundreds of kids to sail each summer and have just started our high
school racing program with 114 kids enrolled for the winter. We rely heavily
upon donations and upon people coming to hear people like Randy Repass and
Frank Butler the Lin and Larry Pardey speak at our spring seminars.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Mahalo.

I've tried to contact Kaptain Krunch regarding the Cal 46, both via e-mail and the phone number given (both on here and on the museums web site. He has not returned my calls or responded to e-mail.
Does anyone know how I can set up an appointment to see the boat?

They have NOT accepted any offers, Scott. My hope is that they get someone to buy this boat who will be able to put a couple bucks into her. From what I've heard, it looks like bringing her back to pristine condition will be about a $25,000 job, unless a person has the skills and can do it all oneself. My hope is that someone who buys this boat will have the interest and the money to do a good job with her and keep her up for future generations.
Annual cost to maintain a boat like this in prime condition under PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE (not do-it-yourself) will be about $10,000 including slips fees, maintenance, insurance, etc. Some folks won't find that any big deal.

I spoke with him the day I originally posted. He is a very nice guy, but
seemed naïve. I suspect that they may have already sold the boat in a
sweetheart deal to a friend without a proper auction and that there is
probably no interest in an auction at all. This is, of course, probably
unlawful under the tax code, but that isnt of much concern to them. Id say
that short of going down there and dropping in on them, your chances arent
great.
Just my opinion and I hope I am wrong. Id definitely keep calling and if
you finally get him, ask him when the auction is going to take place. Good
luck, Scott. I really hope you get this boat if its the one you want.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Peggy and Bill Lapworth's Cal 46 -- help wanted (Scott S)

I've been toying with the notion of living aboard for quite some time, and think that this would be the ideal boat (after looking at photos sent by Tom Vandiver. BTW, Tom, thanks for the photos! I love your floating home.
It would take a special boat to boost my confidence enough to make that move. As I seem to favor Cal boats over others (it seems that most Cal owners are down-to-earth good people) a CC 46 would be a terrific choice.
Perhaps, when the time is right, one of these terrific craft will become available.
Cheers,
Scott

I spoke with him the day I originally posted. He is a very nice guy, but seemed naïve. I suspect that they may have already "sold" the boat in a sweetheart deal to a friend without a proper auction and that there is probably no interest in an auction at all. This is, of course, probably unlawful under the tax code, but that isn't of much concern to them. I'd say that short of going down there and dropping in on them, your chances aren't great.
Just my opinion and I hope I am wrong. I'd definitely keep calling and if you finally get him, ask him when the auction is going to take place. Good luck, Scott. I really hope you get this boat if it's the one you want.

Roger,
I've tried to contact Kaptain Krunch regarding the Cal 46, both via e-mail and the phone number given (both on here and on the museums web site.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Steeio Speaker Placement Cal 29
Terrence Spencer2006-01-08 22:37 UTC
I had a sort of crazy idea about this which I have been thinking about for
some time. My plan was to make a lower hatch board just tall enough to
accommodate a couple of all weather speakers with enclosures on the back.
They could be mounted to face in to the boat when moored or outward when
under way. And then of course they could be stowed when necessary.
I have not installed a stereo yet because I have a 13 year daughter whose
musical tastes would ruin any cruise. I prefer peace and quiet.
I would be interested in other peoples ideas as well, particularly owners of
C29s.

I've seen arrangements with jacks for the antenna in the stern and
box speakers that hang from or are clamped to the pulpit. The speaker
is plugged in when in use. The hatch board idea might work but would
be a little ugly from the other side.

That's why I bought my 15-year-old an iPod. Now she has a device to
hook it to the car speakers. If I can get it, I'll lose it.

I moved the speakers to the shelf left and right of the companion way and aft of the stove about 13 inches to center, angling forward and upwards towards the opposite side of the main bulkhead. The sound inside the cabin to the v berth has improved from muddy to great! The music can easily be heard outside now and this is great for dock parties.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Peggy and Bill Lapworth's Cal 46 -- help wanted (all)
Doug Gardner2006-01-10 00:08 UTC
Hello Cal-List:
I spoke with Captain Crunch at length just before the New Year. He referred me to the marine surveyor, Fred Hecklinger, that did the survey for donation purposes. The surveyor sent me a copy of the survey.
The boat is in bad shape. His report is brief, and I understand the boat has had seven years of no maintenance.
Here is a summary of the pertinent sections:
Basic Data:
Name: Merrydown,
Hull #: Not listed
Builder: Jenson Marine
Designer: Bill Lapworth
Year Built: 1970?
U.S. Documentation # 515657
Approx Market Value: $50,000
Basic Condition:
Although this vessel can be considered as basically sound, proper maintenance has been ignored and a general refurbishment and updating of equipment will be necessary before this vessel can be considered as suitable for normal usage.
It is readily apparent that this vessel has not seen normal usage for several years.
Hull Construction and Condition:
There is no evidence of damage through a collision or by heavy grounding.
There is no evidence of failure of the bonds where bulkheads and other members are fitted into the hull.
The hull surfaces below the waterline, when carefully inspected, reveals rather many blisters and pin-size holes in the gel coat
these conditions will certainly continue to develop, and if ignored, could lead to a breakdown of the lamination
The topsides of the hull show some general abuse, especially on the starboard side, amidships.
Deck Construction and Condition:
The decks were checked with a Moisture Indicator, and there are some sections of the deck that indicate water in the core material. This deserves further investigation and repairs as necessary.
Layout on Deck:
Proper maintenance has been completely neglected for several years, and all surfaces are very dirty. The finish to the wooden trim is very poor
There is a foot well just aft of the steering station on deck. This foot well was seen to be full of water so that the overflow of the water drained to below decks down the main hatch.
Layout Below:
multiple water leaks to the below decks area has created an extremely damp atmosphere and a general deterioration of the joinery work below decks has been the result.
The water has collected in the bilge up to the cabin sole.
Mold is well established throughout the below decks areas.
Rig:
a general refurbishment and replacement of running rigging will be necessary
The mainsail was stowed below. It is perhaps serviceable.
The roller-furling jib has been left bent on and is seriously weakened by exposure to the sun.
Through Hulls:
None of the valves at any of the through hulls were found to be operational. Many were not accessible because of the water in the bilge.
Propulsion:
The engine and all of the associated equipment has been neglected for many years.
The fuel in the primary filter was seen to be contaminated
the fuel tank should be considered as contaminated
Electrical:
The batteries were without charge, and have been for some time
The system should be thoroughly checked, organized, and updated by a competent electrician.
Water:
Fresh water tanks
and systems should be considered as unsuitable
Recommendations:
Essential: Complete a thorough refit and refurbishment in all departments, both above and below decks.
Photos show the interior surfaces completely covered with mold.
Orange Coast College in Newport Beach, CA had a beautiful Cal 48. They spent over $100,000 on her after they got her as a donation. Glen del Mar was her name. She was used for sailing classes. They put her up for sealed bid, and just sold her for $41,000. Considering that fact, someone is going to spend a lot of money on Bills old boat. This is not one for the faint of heart.
Fred suggests anyone who is interested to go see for themselves the extent of the neglect and deterioation.
I hope that helps in anyone's decision making. 46's in good shape go for around $125,000.

He is a very nice guy, but seemed naïve. I suspect that they may have already sold the boat in a sweetheart deal to a friend without a proper auction and that there is probably no interest in an auction at all. This is, of course, probably unlawful under the tax code, but that isnt of much concern to them. Id say that short of going down there and dropping in on them, your chances arent great.
Just my opinion and I hope I am wrong. Id definitely keep calling and if you finally get him, ask him when the auction is going to take place. Good luck, Scott. I really hope you get this boat if its the one you want.

Roger,
I've tried to contact Kaptain Krunch regarding the Cal 46, both via e-mail and the phone number given (both on here and on the museums web site. He has not returned my calls or responded to e-mail.
Does anyone know how I can set up an appointment to see the boat?

They have NOT accepted any offers, Scott. My hope is that they get someone to buy this boat who will be able to put a couple bucks into her. From what Ive heard, it looks like bringing her back to pristine condition will be about a $25,000 job, unless a person has the skills and can do it all oneself.
Some folks wont find that any big deal.

Yikes !
I looked at a Cal 48 in Ensenada about 7 years ago. They were asking $95k then and it was
in excellent shape. They had bought it for a charter business and that never took off. I was
sorely tempted but those boats need a 50 foot slip and they are rare here.
I looked at a Cal 43 because they will go in a 40 foot slip. I finally settled on the 40
because of the class.

I would think that someone with skills and time could do it but it would be a big job. I
don't think anyone could afford to have a yard do it unless you were made of money. It's a
shame but it sounds like a salvage job for someone with time and talent. I nominate Rog.

Thanks for the update, Doug.
This is very sad since I know how both of them loved that boat. I have a
couple of great photos of them with their dogs, Bungee and Dory, out
cruising. What a shame. I guess, though, that after Peggy fell and so
weakened and with Bill getting progressively less aware of things, that
these things just happen. I'd sure like to see the photos the surveyor took,
if you want to forward them to me.
Mold is a common problem that doesn't bother me as much as most. That's whey
they invented pressure washers and bleach. Blisters on the other hand are a
big deal and can compromise the hull. Water in the deck core is a bad deal,
too.
What a shame!
Anyway, thanks again.

When I was looking for Cal 43s, I found one on the east coast with a
wet deck and some rot in a bulkhead. I did a little (too little )
research and it looked like a big job. Roby had one rotted bulkhead
on Intrepid II that he replaced.
We had a lot of mildew in Conquest but it came right off with a spray
mildew cleaner. Mold would probably be another matter.
They say fiberglass boats can take neglect but that doesn't cover
this much. Illusion sounded pretty bad when Stan Honey got it but I
don't they had this much to fix.
Too bad. One basket case is enough for me.

OK, Cal sailors, what's the difference between mold and mildew? In my
mind, "mildew" is what I have below in my boats, and "mold" is the stuff
that scares timid people. I have potential clients calling me all the
time, trying to avoid eviction by asserting "there is black mold all
over the apartment." "Black mold" is a current phobia, it seems.
That's why my boats have mildew below. So what's the difference?

It's thicker. That's all I can say. Mildew is mold growing in little
isolated spots. Mold is contiguous and covers the surface. They're
all fungi. I think it also implies growing in spaces, not just on the
surface. My son and daughter-in-law had a pipe leak in their house,
in the laundry room, that did not show externally. When they found
it, the walls were filled with mold. They had to tear out all the dry-
wall and rebuild the laundry room after the leak was fixed. A
previous repairman employed by a new home guarantee outfit had done
an incompetent job on the leak the first time.
Fortunately his brother (my other son) is a lawyer.

It is a cryin shame the yard that was storing the boat did not do anything to help store the boat properly (ie shrink wrap to protect from the elements). I guess the storage check was not enough to take care of a costomers boat.

The boat sat in the river out in back of Bill and Peggy's ex house for six
years until November 2004.
By then, it was probably a bit late to worry about it, Greg.

Hello Cal-List:
I spoke with Captain Crunch at length just before the New Year. He referred me to the marine surveyor, Fred Hecklinger, that did the survey for "donation purposes." The surveyor sent me a copy of the survey.
The boat is in bad shape. His report is brief, and I understand the boat has had seven years of "no maintenance."
<snip>
This is very sad. I am sure that Bill would be appalled if he had all of his faculties, and I truly hope someone can rescue Merry Down. It would be a shame (like most Cal boats ) if it just deteriorated to the point of no return.
To brighten ones day, I ran into the broker for this boat.
http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=USD&units=Feet&checked_boats=1131890&slim=quick&
After being very clear that there was no way I would be interested, (4 kids, tuitions, why I sold Crackerjack) he told me that the guy who owns this Cal 43 has spared and spares no expense. He said it did not sell last year, and it was taken back off the market for the season. He cannot believe that no one has moved on this, and it sure does look like a well maintained Cal. Clearly at ~$100K, there a tons of options, but the broker says that it is impeccable, and like anything else, it could sell for a bit less.

I like Cal 43s and looked for one before buying the 40. There was one
in Oregon that I was really interested in but the owner made some
modifications that would have to be undone and I lost interest. I
don't know if he's sold it yet but the price was way down last time I
looked. I saw one on the east coast that had a wet deck and was cheap
but not cheap enough. It was later donated, the broker told me. I saw
this one listed but never went to look.
The advantage of the 43 is that it has a cabin with a head aft so it
is a 2 cabin boat. The galley is really well laid out. I like it
better than the 48 which can be wet because of low freeboard forward
(seen any of the Volvo 70 photos ?). There is one in LA Yacht club
that is really nice below but needs some cosmetics topside. I know
the owner and think he was going to sell because of age. I don't know
if it's still available.
If you don't want to race, these are really nice boats. They will fit
in a 40 foot slip, a major consideration in southern California. They
are a lot heavier than the 40. About 6,000 pounds, I think. They
would be great cruising boats. The one in Oregon had circumnavigated
with a couple aboard.
