John, works like this:
CAB - CAL Boats
9 - CAL 29
0966 - Hull Number 966
0277 - Built February 1977
There was an alternate system that used letters for months starting in a
model year of around August or September, e.g., August 1982 would be
something like A83 at the end instead of month/year.
Cheers
Charlie

I may be wrong, but was always told that the hull # makes up the last 3
digits of the full hull ID.
The full ID for the 1977 2-29 is CAB909660277

Before they approached four digits for hull numbers, I believe the Cal 29 was designated by CAB29 ### ####, judging by earlier hulls. Not sure when that change occurred.

Thanks, Charlie!
I got the boat, and the hull number info, from the guy that
introduced me to my wife.
It's kind of an interesting story. He had the boat for about 4
years, the 1st two of which my wife sailed with him and the last 2 I
had sailed with him, but never together except for once after we
married.
He'd taken on a partner shortly after that she and I didn't care
for, and as soon as that partner wanted out, we bought it. :)

Do a "Google" search for "HIN Coast Guard" - there are a couple of sites that explain the changes in HIN numbers through the years.

Cool! Any idea where I'd find this full ID number on a Cal 25? I don't
see it anywhere in my paperwork.
Thanks!
