Refastening stainless hardware to aluminum mast
Mark2006-01-23 04:48
I was surprised at how easily all my hardware came off my mast during
a long overdue inspection and repaint. Now I would like to return the
favor to any future owner of my boat, or myself in the later on, and
refasten the hardware properly. What is best to prevent corrosion
between the Aluminum and stainless fasteners?
Thanks
Mark

Buy a small canister of "lanocote" at west marine or your favorite
chandlery. For less than 10 bucks you will have a lifetime supply. (G)

In response to suggestions on this list or the Seafarer list, I went to
my local pharmacist and bought a small container of anhydrous lanolin,
for the same purpose.
I just used it on my truck rack. It's an oak frame on the back of my
pickup, for carrying the kayak, the sailboat booms, etc. I've got it
braced with aluminum bar stock and fastened with stainless machine
screws. Those of you who know Michigan will know that the metals are
exposed to a salt-water environment for 4-5 months per year, and that
the salt water flies at highway speeds. When I rebuilt the rack for the
new used truck, there ewas some corrosion where the stainless contacted
the aluminum. I used lanolin there this time.
We'll see what happens. It's extremely viscous, especially in the cold
weather that I was working in (ca. 30° F.) and quite tenacious.
