RE: [Cal_Boats] Rudder Lubrication on Cal2-25 (Travis)

Hi, Travis. Yes, it should be lithium grease. Have you ever removed
the rudder? It builds up crap inside just like winches do. Is the boat
in the water? Is this a long standing problem, or has it gotten worse
over time? There can be several reasons for a sticky rudder. Also a
few tricks for cleaning it out.
Cheers

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Rudder Lubrication on Cal2-25
Hi all,
I have a Cal2-25. The rudder was not moving smoothly and easily. I
noticed a grease fitting on the tube housing the rudder post, and
greased the fitting. Later, I was told that I should have used lithium
grease--I used standard grease. Apparently the regular grease will
emulsify with water--causing problems. Have I screwed up? The greasing
did not seem to help the rudder turn more freely.
Thanks,
Travis

I bought the boat 2 1/2 years ago. The prior owner did a lot of work on the boat, but I don't know if he removed the rudder. The boat is in the water and I have not removed the rudder. I plan to pull the boat this spring for bottom paint. The problem has existed since I bought the boat and seems to be getting somewhat worse. It is stiff enough that, in light air, I don't need a "tiller tamer." I don't know anything about how rudders, shafts, bearings, etc are assembled, so I would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Travis

Who needs antifreeze when we have cheap vodka?
NYBoilermaker2006-01-25 14:26 UTC
Good Morning All,
I'm the proud new owner of a Cal 33-2 and while I was making my do
list yesterday, I noticed that the fresh water tank and icebox hoses
were winterized with antifreeze. Instead of using antifreeze, does
anyone have experience using vodka instead. How does it effect the
seals/hoses/etc.
Thank you,

If you can find out what they used, do so. I'm guessing that they used
an antifreeze made for potable water systems--it's used widely in RVs
and such. I would prefer that to vodka, which has the deficiency of
losing its alcohol via evaporation. In the early days of automobiles,
alcohol was used as an antifreeze, but the unpressurized colling systems
and warm engine operating temps made the stuff evaporate. It was a
constant chore, checking the antifreeze.
I use vodka as a compass fluid, in older compassses using alcohol and
water.

JD, Welcome to the group..
There are a few of us here with the 33-2 (Raymond Hunt Design). I have
collected a few owners from this and other list, promising to keep everyone
in touch when problems and questions arise.
We have an 87 Cal 33, and there is another in our marina. What we have
found is that we seem to be replacing items about the same time. Jeff (the
other owner) replaced his water pump, mine quite working the following
weekend. We replaced the thru hulls on the last haul out, and was able to
show him what to look for this winter. Etc.Etc Etc.
We have not used any antifreeze since our first winter with the boat (we are
into our 6th year). Of course the winters here in NC are milder than on the
Chesapeake. After the first winter it took us about all season to flush the
odor from the tanks. Now we drain completely, water heater included, and
hope for the best. The water lines are the same material that went thru the
class action suit for home owners in the '80s. It is similar to what they
now call "pex". I honestly believe it will sustain a slight amount of
flexing in the freeze/thaw of winter.
I would recommend finding a low spot (hoses run thru the bilge to the head)
separate the lines and clear out with compressed air. Get the antifreeze
out of the tanks before it turns rank.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me on or off
list. We can use our knowledge base to solve almost anything. Certainly we
will have enough input to over-engineer any problem (G).

Re: [Cal_Boats] Who needs antifreeze when we have cheap vodka?
Darr LaFon2006-01-27 01:04 UTC
JD,
I agree with what John said, except that it does get colder on the Chesapeake. I keep my Cal 33-2 (1986) in Annapolis and one winter was working on replacing the fuel lines and noticed that the water in the oil catch pan under the engine had frozen.
The pink stuff is not too bad. What I do is pour some in the water tanks and then pump them dry at the start of the winter season. I have seen some folks have all sorts of challenges on the Chesapeake when their water systems "popped" during the winter and they found out about it the next spring. Vodka is an interesting idea, as long as it does not eat through the hoses.
I live in Cincinnati until 2008 and we plan to move back to the Bay area. One place may be Cambridge. Right now the boat is on the hard at Annapolis naval station. Last week they had some high winds that knocked over a few of the Navy 44s and some private boats that were in dry storage. Must have been some big gusts there.
I love the Cal 33s and have pretty much taken apart everything over the years and replaced a lot of original stuff as it wears out. There are a few idiosyncrasies, but the boat is wonderful and you should have years of fun. Where was your vessel before Cambridge?
Blue Skies,

Hiya Darr,
Great to hear from you.
Yes, for the last couple days, it's been blowin'
like stink. Today was nice; sunny, light winds and about 45 degrees.
The boat's been here in Cambridge for two years
and before that was in TX. A couple I know bought
the boat, cruised Maine last summer and loved the
lifestyle so much that on the way home they
bought a Caliber 38 and are moving aboard full
time this summer. The CAL didn't have the storage or range which they needed.
Those were new 44s weren't they? Ouch.
