Anybody do any sailing up in the Vancouver Island area. I am planning
to do two qualifiers, the Southern Straight Race in April and the
Swiftsure in May to prep for the Van Isle 360 in 2007.
I'd love to get some local info about the straight race.

Bill,
I've never done the Southern Straight Race but crew with a bunch of
guys who have done all the races, Swiftsure, VanIsle 360, Salt
Spring
Island etc etc. I will ask them for info and and get back to you.
Tomorrow is race day so should have some info for you Mon.
We are training for the Swiftsure ourselves, will be on a J30.

Hi Bill,
I live in Vancouver and I did my first Southern Straights in 1978.... and I have actually lost
count of how many... somewhere between 12 and 15. 10 or so Swiftsures and 1 Vanisle
360.
Southern Straights is known as a gear buster. It is a 120 mile, early season race which
means it is cold, wet and can blow like stink. 3 of the last 5 have seen 45 - 55 knots in the
middle of the night. In last years edition the carnage was fairly devastating (hence the lack
of finishes in the results on last years web page.... ( i didn't do it last year but have lots of
stories of the night)
I love all three of these races... they are challenging in all respects. Local knowledge is
huge for tides, currents and wind/wind holes and tactics for all.
What sort of boat are you going to do them on? The Vanisle 360 has a PHRF limit of 140 or
faster....
