Cal 2-24

I guess there were more 2 series Cal 24's built than the original centerboarder that I have! The 2-24 is not a dog, it rates as fast as the Cal 25, no slouch. If you need rigging parts try Seal's Spars in Alamed. I don't know what else you'd need that is specific to this boat. Bacon Sails has sail size lists but I find they are not always completely accurate, best to do your own measuring. Jerry Sobel, Olde Shpritz, Cal 24 #000000071 (notice how the production run is getting longer and longer? About 175 of these boats were built. I think that's enough, don't you? Odin Braath owned the last boat off the production line.

It is apparent that there is a shortage of people on our list who own the 2-24. Interesting about the boat-on keel. Shared with the T/2, I believe. A few items compared to the pop top 25. There is probably a 3/8" plywood deck under the deck outer skin. Any inner skin would only be cosmetic. The deck wood would tend to get wet. Look for sponginess. Hull would be solid glas and reasonably thick. Look for old garden hose valves on thru-hulls and replace them. Probably would have to replace the thru-hulls too, since the $%*$)& valves won't come off. Probably won't turn either. Assume that the center lower shrouds are attached to chainplates that bolt to the wood main bulkhead. Look for leaks (water stains) around internal chainplates. That may indicate rot in the bulkhead. Check the filet bonds from all bulkheads (also under seats) to the hull. These are kind of floaters (should not be hard bonded), but need to grind, cloth, and glas any places where there are cracks or separations. The stern wood where the engine mounts may also get soft/soggy. Replaceable with some effort. Assuming a deck stepped mast. If it is sagging, I have some info on replacement. It is not just the beam, but possibly also the deck pedestal. As always for a bolt-on keel, make sure the bolts are tight and not rusted into oblivion. Hope I'm scaring anybody. All doable stuff. Cheers Charlie
