Hi Nick, I mis-spoke a couple times in my last e-mail so here is the way it was supposed to be written; Hi Nick, I changed out my old Martec 12/10 to a 13/10 and wish I had gone to a 13/12or13. The 13/10 works ok but I feel the Universal 5411 is not working very hard and would benefit from a little more pitch. With the 13/10, I go about 5.5 knots. if I give it more throttle, the revs go up but the boat does not go any faster, so I throttle back down so as to save engine life. Personally I would pass on a 13/9. I replaced the shaft and prop at the same time, and the yard did the machining. I went from a Martec 12/10 folding to a Martec 13/10 I would think your shaft may be too long for the Martec since it has a longer hub than the fixed props I have seen. I do not how old your shaft is but I would consider changing it out at the same time since your boat will be out the water. I bought mine from an outfit back in your neck of the woods. The name escapes me at the moment but I remember it being very reasonable (like $170) for the hi-tech stainless. And don't forget about the cutlass bearing! NOTHING IS CHEAP OR EASY ON A BOAT! So - I don't have a folding prop - mine is fixed and is 13x9 and the Universal 6411. I just cleaned the bottom 2 weekends ago, especially scraped the prop. The max speed that got this weekend was 5.1 knots, max that I've ever seen on my boat is 5.6 knots - immediately after last years bottom job. The prop-calc programs show we need about 15 hp to move our boats at hull speed. So I think the real issue is the limited horsepower in our 5411's. Martec 14x12 and Yanmar 2gm20 will do 6.5 knots @2,900 to 3,200 RPM. Faster RPM just doesn't deliver. I would assume that hull speed would be in this range. check out the graph @: http://www.angelfire.com/tn/santana525/cal92/SPEED.JPG Tom Tilley <ti… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: So - I don't have a folding prop - mine is fixed and is 13x9 and the Universal 6411. Re: [Cal_Boats] Yanmar 2GM20 - was Prop Change Out(Eric)

Eric, Very interesting... I gather that the extended hub on the Martec gives the increased clearance for using a 14" prop, correct? I know that my stock 13" prop does not have the recommended prop to hull spacing - I've got 1.5" instead of the suggested min of 1.95". I do have a question about your 2gm20 installation as that was one of the engines that I was considering - but was hesitating because of the stringer spacing and stringer to cockpit floor height. Can you enlighten me as to how the stringers were modified and the engine mounted and how tight is the fit on the engine top to the cockpit. Thanks! Hello Tom, Have you considered a BetaMarine? For my 2-27, it was a drop-in repowering project. No modification to the stringers required. Regards, Michael Duvall s/v Magic, Cal 2-27 Pompano Beach, FL --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail - Helps protect you from nasty viruses.

Michael - Yes - I've looked a BetaMarine and all of the Universal models with the 11.5" mounting centers. However, because of $$$ I'll probably put a used unit in that I have given a valve and ring job to. I've got a lead on a low hours Yanmar 2GM (which is 12hp continuous and 15hp intermittent) for under 1 boat-buck. It has an high temp problem - probably from a broken pump impellor that all of the little pieces didn't get flushed out - that the PO gave up on an just had a new 2GM20 installed instead. That's why my query to Eric about his 2GM20 installation. Pics of the 2GM20 Yanmar shoe-horned into place. Impossible to snag pic of the right rear mount unless I go through the laserette. Havent been down to the boat for a couple weeks.. Eric - Thanks! This first pic that I opened "front down" answered my biggest question, and then the rest of the pics answered almost all of the others. I was shying away from Yanmar or Westerbeke because of the 11.5" centers on the 5411. But now I see a better way of shifting out the stringers than I was originally thinking about. I do appreciate it. TomT Tom Tilley 1982 Cal 9.2 "Lenochka" Hull #53 San Mateo, CA --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Use Photomail to share photos without annoying attachments.
