>Last summer my Matie and I were most fortunate to be at
the Shorline Yacht Club, which was the destination after
the Redondo Bch YC Queen Mary Race, as well as the sponsor
of the Transpac at the starting end. So we were in on the
pre-race festivities of the Transpac <I saw Dancing Bear,
as well as half a dozen other Cal 40s at Rainbow Harbor the
day before the Cal 40 Transpac Start. Dancing Bear owners
modernized the cockpit, put in modern fiberglas sparyskirts
wide enuff to sit on...got rid of the teak boards. The boat
looked as modern as a current production cruiser/racer. The
owners had connections with, or included, someone who
builds new boats, racers, I think.
Maybe we have a pic or two, I'll have to look. I'll look
for the article in the issue of Crusing World. Oh, how
cool!

PS, these boats were pretty fast. Despite the light winds
we had to go full throttle with sails up to stay with them
as we tried to escort the fleet towards Hawaii, we got
about quater the way to Catalina/West End before we turned
around and motored back to Marina del Rey. By the afternoon
the wind had nearly died and it took them a day just to
clear Catalina. They'd have maybe won the transpac if
they'd had good wind at the start. Very competitive,
dedicated, and spirited group of racers!

(my boat does have a certain family resembelance to the 40,
by the way, the snub nose, hull shape above water, and the
low freeboard, and the windglass stern---oh, they don't
have a wineglass stern?)

Jerry,
The article on Dancing Beard in this month's Cruising World is part one of two. Next months issue continues on the rehab of the boat. Next time you make your way to SF Bay you will have to come by Richmond. Between RYC harbor and a djacent Brickyard Cove there are 8 Cal 40s... And one Cal 36.
Mike Robinson
Cal 36 #4
Pt Richmond.
