I had a chance to stand next to and knock on the hull of one of these babies in Annapolis at the last Volvo. There ain't much there. I might prefer the dinghy. Whoever said $15M sure didn't consider the maintenance tail. Several trailer trucks worth going round the world. Also the salaries of all the pros that sail the boats. But watching the Black Pearl half-airborne moving at improbable speeds made my pulse beat faster, even watching a small image on my computer screen. Wow. I still don't think I want to go offshore on one of these, but I have to say I wouldn't mind banging about on one for the afternoon. Wow. At least they can sail in waves without breaking in half. It seems to me that the real test of a boat is whether it can sail in whatever weather happens by. These dainty America's Cup vessels that operate in a 5 mph band of wind conditions don't cut it. My real gripe is that races are now named for corporate enterprises and that all the boats are plastered with ads. Chris Campbell
