1974 CAL 35 SOLID BOAT CAL35 SAILBOAT NEEDS A LITTLE WORK; Item number: 4613769114 I don't know if anyone has posted it here yet, but there's a Cal 35 with a pilothouse cabin top on eBay. Sounds a bit rough, but it's at $1,000 now (reserve not met). Auction ends next Tuesday. Located in St Augustine, FL. Reportedly not a hurricane-damage project. Hello all, A couple of years back, we had a group of people that all purchased Cal Burgees. Within the Burgee there is a large C with an @ symbol.....What is the orgin of this? Is this the original Cal logo/burgee? The design of the burgee was the creation of some one on our internet list. At this point I don't remember who created the design. However I was involved in ordering the burgees, collecting the money from listees and distributing the burgees. You may recall that we as a group decided to make a small profit on each burgee with which we then made a charitable donation to Challenged America. Challenged America is an organization located here in San Diego that has made it possible for people with some handicaps to become sailors. I live in San Diego and own a CAL T/2 that I race. I would be interested in getting a burgee. Also, what is the significance of the "at" in the middle of the design? Bill

The burgee, as I recall, was supposed to mean that you were a member of the Cal List, which at that time was with Sailnet. I have always presumed that the @ symbol was supposed to show the association with email. The original design was actually a group effort from the original members of the Sailnet Cal Group. We were starting to have some clout, as the largest active sailnet group with constant members over 250-300 nation wide, decided to form a virtual yacht club. Most Yacht clubs have a formal burgee, so we designed our own. Since there were many differing sized boats, we chose the "C" to represent Cals (of course) and the "@" to represent the "virtual" aspect of the club. This design seemed plain on the white burgee so adding the shear stripe, common to early Cals, was added into the design. Blue was favorite color of the various designs submitted for final vote. A production run was made after collection of enough pre-orders to cover the initial setup and shipping cost. A second run was made several years later with the assistance of Dirk. I don't recall if we ever followed through with the "virtual" yacht club, charter, mission statement, etc. If we had "officers" they are members that are no longer on the list. But as with most clubs, the membership has changed over the years, new members bringing their own personalities and knowledge to our club. I have been flying my Cal burgee on my Cal 39-2 for at least two years in the SF Bay Area. It's beginning to get a bit worn, however, and I'd love to get another to eventually replace it. So, Dirk, was the set up done by a flag firm that produces burgees? If so, could individual list members order additional burgees from that firm?
