Working off displacements, and figuring that you need to plow some waves in your area, I'd say you are around the low 20s on HP. CAL 25 - 4000lb CAL 29 - 8000lb CAL 40 - 15000lb (all are empty weights) CAL 25 - 8 to 9.9 HP CAL 29 - about 20-22 HP CAL 40 - 40 HP Winging it in an engineering sort of way. How many HP should I be looking for? My Ranger 23 has an outboard, so the move up to an inboard requires more knowledge on my part. I'll be sailing on the SF Bay and adjacent coastal area. --Chris Yahoo! Groups Links

We haven't had the opportunity to see what it does in a steep chop. There just isn't room for a larger engine in the hull unless the quarter berths are sacrificed. The Pathfinder that was installed by the previous owner required cutting into the quarter berths and ladder. I scrapped the wood engine box and am repairing the quarter berths. My Choate 40 had a much larger hull volume but the Pathfinder I had in it pushed us along at 7 all the way from Hawaii. That was rated at about 30, I think.
