I wandered across this following a story from Scuttlebutt: a Cal 29 for
$9,500 at Port Richmond, California:

As a reference, last week, I bought a 1975 Cal 2-29 with the Faryman
A30 (12HP). Beautifully taken care of interior. 5 sails, Helmsman
Station, Awlgrip Hull, VHF, gimballed stove, recently replaced ports,
reupholstered berths (V and 2 quarter berths), heater, and enclosed
head for $10,000.
Although I think I got a slightly good deal, I don't think it was a
steal. The $9500 boat might be a steal based on what I've seen
recently assuming it is in any where near the condition mine happens
to be. As far as I can tell from looking it over and having a survey
is that the deck needs painting.

Ed--
It sounds like you scored a nice boat. Diesel, wheel steering, and a nice interior are at the
top of my list.
How long were you looking?

Thanks for the tip. I live 20 minutes away from here, so I'll check it out.
Best,
Chris

I was looking for close to a year for "something with sails". I
started narrowing down my list at the beginning of the year. I
looked at a few boats but nothing felt right.
As soon as I saw the add for this boat I had a sense it was the
one. Remember, too, now is a good time to buy, at least from what
I've seen. Slip fees are coming due. People are wanting to get
into another boat before it gets warm (at least in my part of the
country) and license fees are coming up. You have good leverage to
buy right now.
The guy was asking $16,400 for this boat. I offered $10k and didn't
flinch. He rejected my offer after I rejected the counteroffer. He
came back the next day.
