Stainless handrails for Cal34
camaflge2006-03-09 22:45
I want to replace my teak handrails on my Cal 34 with stainless.
Anyone know a place in Southern Cal that makes stainless handrails?

Railmakers in Costa Mesa. They made my stanchions and I plan to have
steel grab rails made for the 40. They are on 18th (I think). I can
find it but not give directions. They are hard to find as there is
only a driveway to the street and the plant is away from the street.

We replaced the teak with stainless our selves, it was very easy. We used Sea dog fittings (high profile ones, not the low ones) and two lengths of 1" s/s tubing we ordered from Boat US. The high tech bending method we used was growing right next to the boat, two trees that were growing close to each other! We put the tubing between them and gave a little push and checked it against the deck until we had it right. After over drilling from the inside and filling the holes with epoxy, we through bolted the mounts in place with fender washers on the inside. Check out the photo that is named " New hardware" in the album below.

Hi Group,
I have a Cal 34, Hull #9. The base of my mast appears to be moving a bit. Is the base just sitting on that plate and staying in place with tension from the shrouds and stays, or does the plate have some kind of shoulder to it that the perimeter of the mast base sits on?
Any info would help.
Thanks,
Dean

Dean,
I can't speak directly to your 34, but I have recently had the mast off
Nemesis. Its deck plate does have a shoulder about an inch tall, with a
strengthening grid a couple of inches higher. That is through bolted
through the deck and the top flange on the compression post. Any
significant movement would destroy the deck and pull the post out of
line. I cant imagine what it would take to cause that.

Dean,
The base should have a series of vertical plates that make a shoulder to center the mast and hold it from moving laterally. It shouldn't be able to move enough to notice.
Do you mean that the mast base is moving as well, or is the base staying put and the mast moving?
If the base is solid and the mast is moving, is there any deformation on the base of the mast itself? This is a common place for corrosion to eat completely through the base of the mast. This could be very serious.
You can pull the stick and have a welder attach a partial or full collar to rebuild the bottom of the mast. I've heard of guys cutting a couple of inches off, but then you need new standing rigging and give up a bit of sail area.

Does not sound good for the base of the mast to move at all.
My deck plate has a 1" + collar with a crossing grid. However, when I inspected the peice a few years back when I got the boat one of the sections had a 2+" crack at the base of the plate. I had it welded back together, but I could see that if it went on for a while, the grid system might fail.
My boat is pulled and I check this each year...no problems to date.

Blister Repair Live Web Q&A?
Rog Jones2006-03-14 02:31 UTC
Hi gang -
Is anyone interested in a blister repair?
If you are, I would host a chat room seminar on blister repair, complete
with various downloads (such as materials, equipment, list of suppliers,
etc.) and photos.
We could first go with diagnosis, then with repair.
Then you can ask questions and we can all discuss.
We may as well use the features that Yahoo gives us for this kind of thing.
If it works out, I am going to ask people who have done engine replacements,
wiring replacements, etc., to do the same for us Cal folks.
Let me know and I'll get everything together and give it away to you so that
you can become your own expert. And as you gain more knowledge, you can come
back and share it with the group.
Take care.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Blister Repair Live Web Q&A?
Terrence Spencer2006-03-15 03:50 UTC
I am interested right now! Of course I am smack in the middle of the whole
process. But every boat project is a new learning experience for me.
When I hauled in late October, I counted 75 blisters, none bigger than a
quarter. After reading, consulting, and searching the web, I concluded that
everybody has an opinion on what to do. Being somewhat conservative (with a
small c) in nature, I decided to do a complete peel and am glad I did. My
wife gave me a bad time when I paid a guy $900 for a half a day¹s work to
peel my bottom, but it was worth it. There is no way I could have ground
out and filled that many blisters and ended up with a fair bottom.
So after drying for 3+ months, this weekend is the rolling and tipping
party. If any of you with expertise (or even with a strong, steady arm) are
near the Tacoma area and want to experience the joy of putting on epoxy and
barrier coats, I will be at Hylebos boatyard Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to
welcome you.
Kidding aside, I have some trepidation about getting these coatings on
without sags and runs. I was advised by the fellow who peeled my bottom, to
do several coats (4-5 mils) of West Systems and then follow it with about
the same thickness of Interlux Barrier Coat. I f anyone on the list has
done this before, I would appreciate advice on how to get these coats on
thick enough to thoroughly wet it out and thin enough to avoid runs and sag
when the epoxy kicks.
Thanks in advance for any good suggestions.

I'd be very interested in some blister repair expertise given my
interest in not one but 2 old fiberglass boats.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Blister Repair Live Web Q&A?
Fred Haas2006-03-15 20:55 UTC
Terry,
If I can get my act together, I'll stop by the Hylebos Marina on Saturday
to inspect your project. I've seen Kailoa III on Commencement Bay a couple
of times in the last year or so. When did you buy her? I have no experience
with that type of repair, but am always willing to watch other people work.

Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Blister Repair Live Web Q&A?
I am interested right now! Of course I am smack in the middle of the whole
process. But every boat project is a new learning experience for me.
When I hauled in late October, I counted 75 blisters, none bigger than a
quarter. After reading, consulting, and searching the web, I concluded that
everybody has an opinion on what to do. Being somewhat conservative (with a
small c) in nature, I decided to do a complete peel and am glad I did. My
wife gave me a bad time when I paid a guy $900 for a half a day's work to
peel my bottom, but it was worth it.

Hi gang -
Is anyone interested in a blister repair?
Take care.

Dean,
The base should have a series of vertical plates that make a shoulder to
center the mast and hold it from moving laterally. It shouldn't be able to
move enough to notice.
Do you mean that the mast base is moving as well, or is the base staying put
and the mast moving?
If the base is solid and the mast is moving, is there any deformation on the
base of the mast itself? This is a common place for corrosion to eat
completely through the base of the mast. This could be very serious.
You can pull the stick and have a welder attach a partial or full collar to
rebuild the bottom of the mast. I've heard of guys cutting a couple of
inches off, but then you need new standing rigging and give up a bit of sail
area.

Hi Group,
I have a Cal 34, Hull #9. The base of my mast appears to be moving a bit. Is
the base just sitting on that plate and staying in place with tension from
the shrouds and stays, or does the plate have some kind of shoulder to it
that the perimeter of the mast base sits on?
Any info would help.
Thanks,

RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: Blister Repair Live Web Q&A? (all members)
Rog Jones2006-03-16 00:05 UTC
Okay, I'll start getting the resources together and up on one of my .ftp
sites so you can download.
Let's begin thinking about the end of April. I am kind of up to my navel
with work right now. Will try to do two chat room sessions (because of time
differences) so that you right coast folks don't have to be tired the next
day.
We'll cover prevention, diagnosis, repair alternatives (theory and actual
practice), drying, removal of damaged material, peeling, laminate
replacement, filling and fillers, fairing, a little bit of chemistry - you
need to know this if you are going to avoid doing it again sometime - resin,
reinforcement and barrier coat selection, paint and bottom paint and
application methods.
Later.
