CAL rebuild
Bill2006-03-20 18:56
From: Bill in San Diego aboard his 1972 CAL T/2
note...plenty of wind out here in San Diego this month. White caps
on many days and exciting spinnaker reaches during racing. I next
have the SD Hospice Charity Regatta and then the Gerry Browne
regatta, both next week.
My boat is coming along. Laid a new floor, new alcohol stove, new
ice box cover to match new stove top counter area. Installed one
line slab reefing ( too much helm with Genoa 18.5 foot, foot)so I
can reef while racing. This puts the boat under much better control.
Built home made scupper flap and bilge outlet flap to keep water
backwashing in the transom. Re-rigged to a 5 to 1 cunningham back to
cockpit, two sided continuous vang (8:1) and reinforced aft end of
the tiller with side plated to spread load forward. Phew!...Sanded
off the LP primer and getting ready to paint the top sides.
Last week took a first and a second, beating a CAT 30 by 4 minutes
to get my time back from him for the first.
Wish me luck with laying on the LP topsides. Then it's to the non-
skid!

Bill,
What are you doing to the non skid?
I am in the process of recoring my deck using NidaCore. Wife and I finished
de-coring the port side and now comes the recoring and glassing. As of now,
I am having a new non skid in the original pattern put down on the decks.

how do you do that?

Well pardon my complete ignorance, however this is how I understand it. My
guy is buying the pattern which comes in sheets of 3.5' X 8' or 10' and
creating the non skid in his shop, basically laying out the reverse mold on
a flat surface and pouring gel coat over it. Then will pull it up and have
a non skid pattern then cut to fit the deck. This will be the top layer of
the deck as he is doing it.
This guy builds boats and does fiberglass repairs for many boat makers,
which in itself does not mean too much to me, but I have seen his work and
it is quite good! I have been having many sleepless nights trying to decide
what to do to the decks as I want the boat to be brought back to "new"
finish, not just well looks pretty good.....I plan on having this boat for a
long time and with the NidaCore decks, wetness in the decks will never be a
problem again!!
I will be posting pictures of the work to anybody that would like to see.
The fiberglass work should start after next weekend.

CAL rebuild

Hi:
Bill from San Diego here again.
Wow, Greg that's quite a project you took on...and I thought I'd just
throw some fine grit sand or crushed walnut shells onto the wet LP
paint for non-skid. Actually, I am very interested in your project and
would like to see pictures of some of you work. Are they available?
