Volvo 70

I just got this link from Scuttlebutt:
http://www.piratesracing.org/Chopper_Pirates.mov
Wow - the Volvo 70s are a lot more than 70-foot dinghies, though that still
appears to be a pretty accurate description. But watching the Black Pearl
half-airborne moving at improbable speeds made my pulse beat faster, even
watching a small image on my computer screen. Wow. I still don't think I
want to go offshore on one of these, but I have to say I wouldn't mind
banging about on one for the afternoon. Wow.

You probably don't have the right player. I think it's Quicktime
movie. Download it and it should play.

Dinghies? Yup.
Many of us started in El Toros, Sabots or something in the 8-foot pram
class. Then on to Snipes or Lasers or perhaps Laser IIs. Next to
International 14s, 5o5s or something in that range. After these latter
boats, conventional keel boats, even performance boats, feel kind of flat.
Even at age 62, I still spend as much time as I can make in a dinghy, just
to keep the skills up and the sail trim and helm practice. Having sailed for
some great drivers, there is a noticeable difference in the way a
dinghy-experienced driver handles all types of conditions as compared to the
way someone without that experience drives. And there is a noticeable
difference in the way a driver who keeps up with dinghies drives compared to
someone who just drives a conventional keel boat.
What should amaze us all about the Volvo 70s is the intense helm experience
and the endurance required to keep one of these machines performing well for
days and even weeks on end. Four hours racing a 5o5 or an International 14
is physically and emotionally exhausting. Imagine what a Volvo 70 would do
to you! If you want to get the feel for it, try an afternoon in a 49er. It
is humbling.
You are right, Alfred. Wow!

I'm still looking up at 62, but am close enough to worry about saying
"even at age 62, I still...." I just saw the photo of the 90+ year old
guy who waterskis barefoot. Sounds like a good plan for aging.
And on the subject of waterskiing, I was out in my kayak, nabbing my
105th consecutive month on the Great Lakes in it on Sat., Feb. 11, and I
heard a power boat. I turned to look at it, thinking it was a fishing
boat. Nope, water skier, and putting on a real show, too. He was
cutting back and forth furiously behind a big Ski Nautique inboard.
Fell a few times. Remember, I'm in northern lower Michigan and my
estimate of the water temp was around 34° F. Now I have a ready reply
to all those who suggest I'm nuts for paddling around in my kayak (where
I'm usually nice and dry and warm).
And it reminds me of dinghy sailing at the U. of Mich. sailing club.
We had Int'l 470s. The season extended until we pulled the docks in
the fall. A few of the faculty members had some decent cold-weather
sailing clothing but I had a wool sweater and a cotton army field
jacket. I recall sailing when snowflakes were flying and the sheets
were stiff with ice. It made us appreciate warm weather. Now I save
cold-season sailing for the iceboat.

Gulp! Did you have a Hunter 46 # 56265 force you to tack about 100 yards from the finish line? We were 3rd, cruising non spinnaker.
