2-27 Rudder post question - may apply to other Cal's w/ tillers.

Hello,
I'm trying to figure out what the "correct" trim piece is to cover the area where the rudderpost comes through the deck. I currently (or did until this afternoon) have a fiberglass disk that was screwed in place. It was caulked to the post. This caulk and the caulk it was bedded in has failed and it leaks. It also was not cut round and the caulk has turned brown so it looks terrible. I'm assuming this can't be original. I looked at a Cal 25 that is next to me, and it has a teak disk at its rudder post. I was thinking about trying to make a new piece out of starboard, but I'm a little worried that it will look worse than what I took off. I'm looking for feedback on what other boats have.
Thanks

My boat came without any rudder post trim. It was hiding under those rubberized squares. Yesterday, I was out racing with Stan Louis In San Pedro, on his Cal 29, and I asked him about his trim piece. He said that he believed the teak disk was original trim.
So, I am not sure If I am going to make a wood cover plate or simply, tape off the deck put mold release and make a lamination copy of the non skid. Has anyone been successful using this method?
