Planning to Trailer Cal 28 to Phoenix, then to Rocky Point, Mexico - Problems?
rua842006-04-08 19:42
The Cal 28 trailer under construction in San Diego should soon be
finished. I must decide if we leave the boat in San Diego, or trailer
her to Mexico, per our original plan. My wife likes hanging out in
San Diego now, but it is twice the distance compared to Mexico. It is
hard to find enough time to sail.
Anyone haul a boat over the mountains between San Diego and Phoenix?
The towing limit on my GMC Sierra says 7,600 lbs. The Cal 28 weighs
6000, and the trailer another 1,500 lbs, or so. Looks like I am right
at the limit.
I wish to avoid further near disasters. After reading everyone's do
it yourself stories, I am feeling inspired to take on some blisters on
the bottom of the boat <a
href="http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/Gangfurdpropshaft.jpg"
target="new">shown here</a>). It would also be nice to really go over
the boat without being hindered by water.
Your thoughts and experience are appreciated.

That's quite a gash. I'd think you'd want to be sure the keel was dry inside before sealing it
over. If you're going to reapir it right, you could enlarge the hole and check the inside to
see if it is wet. Then a hole drilled below to drain any water. Maybe some denatured
alcolhol to dry it out. Then repair it by glassing several layers with epoxy.
I have pulled trailers over Interstate 8 from San Diego to Tucson. The only concern for a
trailer like that would be wind. It can get very windy.

I have a friend on the west side of Phoenix that could help you if you have
trouble . He is a top sailor in the Phoenix Yacht club with a 10,000l hoist
in his back yard and all the equipment needed to repais trailers. He also
has hauled Catalina 30 and ID35 around the west Coast
If in trouble email me back and I know he will not let you down

Thanks for the responses from all of you.
Just so I am on the same page, is the "gash" you refer to the patch
growing sea creatures, or are you referring to the plug inserted into
the propeller shaft? They are both covered with sea growth. Does it
look that bad?
Thanks, again.

your Cal weight is probably a dry, empty boat. Loaded with all its stuff,
it will be heavier. Trailer may be also. Then there is th eload in the
vehicle itself. could you do it? yes, particularly if the trailerr has
brakes, which it should. Would you be "over gross"? I'm betting yes.
Should you? probably not with that rig, though many do. My preference
would be to tow with a rig which has a CGVW of 20% more than you need. I
also prefer longest wheelbase as opposed to shorter wheelbase. Mine is a
crewcab with the long box. I've towed a Cal 27 from Chicago to western
montana and a Cal 27 from western Montana to Santa Barbara, CA., and back.

I was confusing the two boat stories. I'm doing more of that since I passed 65. I think I
would fill the shaft tunnel with polyester or epoxy putty. No wood plugs for me.
