My 10 year old son and I crewed on a CAL 25; Zuma Jay. What a light and responsive boat. The winds started out light and varible. The race course was set at 11 miles. The start is a reverse start so we being the smallest was the first class to start. Just as we started a CAL 48 sailed by us. We didn't know if she was out for a tribute to Bill Lapworth or she was entered in the race. We saw a lot of CALs out on Saturday. Once we figuered out who she was we found her on the entry list. She was starting 24 min. after us. On the downwind leg we led until we got to the Huneme bouy. Then we headed down to the Oman bouy just off the beach in Huneme. A home built boat caught up to us and then the CAL 48 came smoking by us like we where standing still. How beautiful. Once we rounded the Oman bouy we out pionted the CAL and the home built boat. But the CAL 48 was faster, she tacked a couple of times and made the mark. We needed to round the Huneme bouy to starboard, but we tacked a little high. Maybe we could of held out cause the winds rounded the point and we might of made it but who would of known that at the time. Our goal was to do one tack and then head for the north entrance of the Channel Island Harbor break water entrance. Just before we entered the breakwater we got passed by Walts homebuilt boat giving us third place. The winds stayed probably just at or below 10 kts. The wind waves behaved at 2-3 ft and the swell was more like 4-6ft. One of those days you see in a magazine. Randy CAL 2-29 Outpatient Channel Islands Ca New Yahoo! Hi Mike, I am not sure of her name, something like "Kalimera" comes to mind, but I am probably wrong. Daniel Casey "Air Time" Cal 9.2R #75 Santa Barbara, Ca.

"Glin de Mar" was sold last summer by Orange Coast College in Newport Beach under a "sealed bid" auction. OCC spent over $100,000 completely refiting her for their sailing programs. I found out after the 05 Transpac that she was being sold, and in fact, I was too late to place my bid. I also heard that she only fetched about $41,000 for the school. I have admired her for many years while OCC had her. She is a beauty! I also heard that she did not fetch so much as most people who can afford slipage for a 50 foot boat are looking for something more "modern." Too bad. I have a mooring in Newport Beach where I keep my Cal 35 MkII "Coeur d'Or." She would have looked great there! Sea you in all at the Newport to Ensenada start line.... By the way, I have a secret weapon... Brian Caldwell, the youngest solo cirmnavigator, is sailing this N2E with me. We just finished delivering "Ragtime" from the CABO race, and he has agreed to do the race with me. Check out his latest record attempts at: www.liquidflight.net He is looking for flagship sponsors too! Great publicity bang for the buck!
