Current

I know many of you are used to big current, but in the Chesapeake Bay,
currents above 1.5 knots (maybe 2) are very rare. Here is a shot of a
mark in the NOOD regatta last Friday. It was taking us an hour to do a
1 NM windward leg. Many boats hit the marks, and several got stuck to
them. Saw one scene of a guy standing on the mark behind his boat
trying to free the line.

I was racing my Peterson 35 about 25 years ago and we had an
encounter with a mark and strong current. People don't think of
current as a factor in southern California but it is if you want to
win. We were rounding a reaching mark off Newport Beach and my
helmsman was going too close to the mark as I could see a lot of
current running and I was yelling, "Keep it up ! Keep it up !"
We didn't. As soon as we saw we were going to miss the mark, we
tacked. We then sat there stopped as boat after boat went zooming by
sailing with the current. It was almost an hour before we got high
enough to round. We spent the time 100 yards from the mark with our
speed exactly balancing the current. Finally we got high enough and
zipped past it. The fleet had run into a lull close in and we
actually caught up. Still, we had been far ahead until the mistake.
Oh well. That was long ago and I'm lucky I can remember it at my age.
