As the old saw goes....
Q: How do you make a small fortune in the chandlery business?
A: Well, first you start with a large fortune....

Sounds to me like you've just identified a market opportunity! Take it
yourself or try to talk Roger into it! Could be fun.

On the plus side, I do have a variety of
sailing gear stores to go to, just less convenient.
Also, Vikings Boat Supply (one hundred yards from where my racing CAL 25
lives) just shut down. Retirement of the 38 year owner. Oh, well.

The guy who runs the little yard that launches and stores my boat for
the winter is busy making a small fortune. It's quite small, as far as
I can see. He's not going to get rich off me. So I do try to express
my thanks for his work whenever I can.
One day I was in to schedule my launch, and I was waiting for him to get
off the phone. Another guy came in, walked behind the counter, and
started to leaf through the big calendar. I figured it was an employee,
checking to see what needed to be done. Turns out it was another
customer, who was just helping himself to the calendar. If looks could
kill.... But when I asked for a date, I got squeezed in for a very
convenient time. It was evident that a bit of humility went a long way,
and that jerks fell to the bottom of the list.
Most of us like to get thanks for being accommodating. It's always
pleasant when somebody says "thank you." So I try to remember to do it.
