Captain Debbie Photo of San Diego Sailing Trip

Debbie wanted to return again to the boat, so Friday we took off from
Phoenix at 7:47 p.m., arriving at the marina at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. We got
up at 7:30 a.m. Within an hour we were on the water. Sorry. Nothing
exciting to report. Just had a nice time. I singled-handed the entire
operation in and out of the marina, just like the other guys, leaving Debbie
seated in the cockpit and out of danger's way. Not a single issue
presented itself, and I was ready if one did. We were on the water from
about 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Up at 3:00 a.m. today, and we were
on the road back by 4:00 a.m. We arrived in Phoenix at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Photos of the sailing around San Diego Bay, including a tall ship, the
U.S.S. Nimitz, and more, are found on the link below.
We did learn the difference between the various foresails we found onboard.
The large genoa used in all previous adventures developed a tear along a
seam, so it went back into a bag. We pulled out a small jib, which must
have been storm jib. It was so small, we could barely get out of the way of
the the "Spirit of America," a 12 meter monster coming at us near Point
Loma. It just ran out to the point and back downtown. Looked like they
were giving rides to sponsors.
We ditched the storm jib and hoisted a large nylon genoa. What a difference
a sail makes. After bobbing around with the storm jib, we took off like we
were on a nice Arabian horse. Had we not changed sails, I would have
considered the trip a bust. Now I am looking forward to getting back out
there. San Diego was looking good. The new sail allowed us to keep pace
with a regatta under spinackers. They looked to be 30+ footers, too.
There is a photo of Debbie sailing and the boat. Also pictured is a tall
ship encountered on the bay, along side the U.S.S. Nimitz. San Diego's
skyline has sure changed over the past 27 years. The name on my boat still
bears the remains of the original name, "Pirate." Someone carefully removed
the letters "p" and "r." The name is now, "i ate Oceanside, CA." We'll get
around to that one day.

Rest snipped.
I flew back from our Tucson home this morning. Have you looked into flying Southwest ?
Advance purchase is $59 each way. That's 2/3 of a tank of gas. We go to Tucson almost
every other weekend now and driving is a drag. We'll drive once in a while to take the dogs
or pull a trailer with some gear for the new house.
I'm going to have some of the Tucson family over in August when the Cal 40 is finally
sailing and maybe do a few days at Catalina. It was 107 in Tucson yesterday so I can
imagine August.
Nice pictures.
