replacing original spreaders

Hello I am considering replacing the original wooden spreaders on our 1976 Cal 34-2 (hull #538). Any suggestions on the best/most economical process including vendors etc. The boat is moored on Lake Coeur d' Alene and Northern Idaho. Thanks Brian

If they are not, buy some straight-grained spruce or salvage some Sitka spruce and make some new ones. Those are the economical methods. Chris Campbell

My spreaders where replaced on my 2-29. Thank god. They used hard wood. I keep them painted and the wood protected. I check them before each long distance cruise. I did a wet Wednesday last week on a hunter 33 when a spreader pulled out on a port tact in 25 knts of wind, we where going to the windard mark with sea conditions 4-6 ft. Folks, let me tell you something! One, make sure you have somebody young with some kind of mechanical knowledge. Two, there is something about a almost fifty year old running up the mast ( literally) taking care of business. I felt like a quarter mile horse in a 1 mile race. I got a hamburger and a free beer. I may of earned a trip on the olson 30. Any suggestions on the best/most economical > process including vendors etc. I replaced my wood spreaders (dry rot found) with aluminum. Ballenger spars in Watsonville, CA fabricated them. http://www.ballengerspars.com/ . They are a work of art! No more dry rot. Ballenger gave very good service at resonable price.
