Cal 20 Outboard well mods

Has anyone modified the outboard well on their Cal 20? I dodn't use it for an outboard, and would like to glass in the fiberglass blank off plug at the bottom of the well. The problem then is how to keep the drain for the cockpit working. Can you glass in a hose from the existing drain hole in the cockpit footwell, through the outboard well and out the transom via a through-hull valve? Thanks, Bob

But why not glass a hose into the existing well space, with an outlet turned aft-ward so as to get a bit of venturi effect? It would eliminate the need for new holes on the hull. My 20 had the outboard well sealed up as you described before I bought it. They ran a section of tubing from the hole at the front to a thru hull at the plug, it works about as well as the cal25 drains, get a leaf or a twig in the tube and it stops right up. The only major problem with this system is that the well fills with water and the only way to get it out is to pump it out. I am in the process of removing the outboard bracket on the stern and opening back up the outboard well. Matthew Wallace Cal20

How about using the engine well for a mini capt's cooler stocked with beer!!! simply remove the top plate and drill some holes in the bottom of the mini Coleman cooler ( holds about 1-6 pk) insert the bottom plate lines thru the cooler and tie it secure. This holds the bottom plate in place and the cooler in place. Drill an extra hole in the cooler bottom for the drain. The water will drain past the bottom plate. It is simple, and no modification to the boat. Don't forget the lime! I am assuming that you have a stern mount for your outboard. Have you ever tried to repair an outboard hanging over the stern while drifting around ? If your not a beer drinker, you may consider keeping it for working on the engine... I like my well because the outboard is not visible and is close at hand. It's less likely to lift out of the water in seas with the prop ventilating. But you need to make a little baffle around the lower unit to keep water from sloshing into the footwell. And the outboard presents more drag when it's left in. If you lift it out and put it below in the locker where it can be secured on the 2x4 for that purpose, it'll leak gas and smell up the interior. With a transom bracket, you just lift it up and reduce drag, and any gas leakage goes into the water (this is an advantage?). I've left mine in the well and in the water, living with the drag. The coolest accessory is a little fiberglass box with one side open. You cut a hole in the side of the footwell, mount the box into it, and slide the gas tank into the box from the side. The tank is open to the atmosphere but it's also out of the footwell or off the cockpit seat, and sheltered from the sun, too. I saw one of these on a boat in Vermont but have not seen any since. It uses space that usually mostly wasted below and opens up the cockpit nicely. I would live without the outboard but it's nice to have on those evenings when the wind goes to zip. I'd spend all my time diving for the nut or wrench or small clip that just ker-plunked over the side. It's bad enough working on deck, where you get at least one bounce to catch the object before it heads over. When I had Cal 20 # 240, I would stow the outboard and tank below and plug the well with the bottom shaped plug and the top plate had a cleat for fastening all together. The trick with the outboard is to add a cavitation plate so the water doesn't slosh into the cockpit. My only complaint with the well is when motoring in breeze-less conditions, the exhaust gets sucked back into the air intake and the engine loses rpms. On the other hand with a stern bracket, the weight of the bracket and engine propulsion can cause the stern to flex.
