Cal List Member info
Time to resent these age-old messages that helps us all find our way through
the list. If you are new to the list in the past two years, please take a
moment for a refresher in the protocols that help us all make this such a
great resource for Cal boat owners. For the rest of you, reading these
(with names of long-gone listees) is a sail down memory bay. Perhaps the
most important message is the second one about subject lines. Lately, I've
found that many messages have absolutely nothing to do with the subject line
and, because I instantly delete stuff that doesn't interest me, I may miss
out on helping with important questions or learning valuable new
information. Please, please take the time to read both of these messages and
to help us all by following these guidelines.
Thanks.

Subject: [cal-list] New List Member info
I see the list membership has increased a recently, and we have a number
of new names cropping up from time to time.
Welcome to our "family"... You'll see this list is not like any other
you've visited... We digress from time to time, but in general, stick
pretty much to sailing related subjects even if they are not always CAL
specific... Many of us have been members for a number of years and our
"daily dose" of list traffic has become somewhat addictive, I hope it
becomes so for you also.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask... The only stupid
question is the the one that was never asked.
Enjoy,
BC

Subject: [cal-list] Message "Subject" line.
I see it is time to once again remind all of you (yeah, you oldies
toooo) about updating the subject line when replying to messages.
As you know, we often have multiple replies to the original posting, and
then we have replies to the replies.
As we have found out in the past, it makes everything much easier to
track if you do two things when replying:
1. When replying to any message, please place the name of the author of
the message your are replying to, at the end of the subject line, in
parenthesis.
For example, if Joe Domino sends a message with a subject of "help me
I'm sinking", when you reply you add (Joe) to the end of the subject
line.
[Cal_Boats] Re: help me I'm sinking (Joe)
If Timm sends a reply to Joe and you are replying to Timm's reply, place
(Timm) at the end of the subject line.
[Cal_Boats] Re: help me I'm sinking (Timm)
When this is done, everyone knows immediately what part of the thread
you are actually replying to.
2. As if often the case, we "sometimes" (hehehe) divert away from the
original subject within a thread... Please, please, when this happens
make the diversion known by also changing the subject line. For
example:
Bill sends a message re mast step leaks, and one way or another this
leads to a discussion on caulking...
The first person (use me as an example) who leads away from the original
thread should change the subject line with reference to the original,
something like:
Deck Caulking, was [Cal_Boats} Re: Mast Step (Bill)
I know the above are just additional stress for you to remember, but
believe me it makes it easier for all concerned if they are adhered to.
Oh, and please sign your messages so we know who you are, or at least
setup your email preferences so your name appears in the message header.
Thanks for your time and enjoy this, the A#1, list on the 'Net.
