I have heard stories of discontent with Anacapa Boat works before, but in all honesty I think all boatyards have a fair number of dissatisfied customers because running a boatyard is such a complex machine. David Owen and myself have been in Ventura harbor boatyard and went away with mixed feelings but all in all would go back there. The boatyard up here in Santa Barbara is not only way overpriced buy will not allow you to work on your own boat, claiming insurance is the culprit. Good Luck. A follow up..... Although I certainly shared Dan's concern with the staff rigger (no longer there) at the time, I have had very good results with Ventura Harbor Boat Yard and always recommend them over any other boat yard in the area that I know of. They are employee owned, are very cooperative with do it yourselfers and very honest. They have a fair stock of boat yard basics in their chandlery and the prices are not gougie at all. They do encourage you to shop elsewhere to save money on some stuff like bottom paint. They are generous with Lay Days when they are working on your boat, and they will leave you alone if you want to do the work or take care of anything that you need and are willing to pay for. Boat yards are never cheap, but they do good honest work and they seem very honest about quoting prices. I think it's difficult to find and keep good employees with boat-yard skills, but the core group that owns and runs the boatyard are really great people. Everybody that I dealt with was courteous and professional and my bill was as quoted (actually a little less because they credited me much more than I had to pay for bottom paint at Beacon Marine. Speaking of Beacon Marine -- anyone in the Ventura/Channel Island area should support them as much as possible. Once you let the big store run them off, you will be stuck ordering parts while wading through clothing items. The shock is that you will find most basic hardware is cheaper there, and a lot of real chandlery stuff is too. The big guys suck you in with discounts on big stuff and stick it to you for the nuts and bolts. Thanks for the info. I had not been in a So Cal yard in near 20 years so was looking for current info. Will be checking out Wilmington Marine tomorrow as they are closest to home. Dave I too must say that the Anacapa Marine Services had a great supply of items need if you are hauling a boat out. We had some trouble with help in the begining but over all they took good care of us. I notice that botton paint was cheeper then Wm.I will be going there first to look for needed items Dave Paulson Channel Islands ----- Original Message ----- From: pat pat To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, June 09, 2006 6:01 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] SoCal Yards -- VHBY Beacon Marine Thanks for the info.
