Re: [Cal_Boats] Beam replacement ( Rog )
Hello Alan,
I believe you are our resident expert on stainless steel!
How do you go about pickling and pacifying 316 stainless.
I had new chainplates made for my CSY44WO and am polishing them by
hand, what else do I need to do before I install them?
I have a Cal2-30 # 143 which has the galvanized steel beam but since she
has always been in fresh water the beam looks perfect.
I looked at a Cal 34 some years ago on Long Island Sound and the first
thing I did was reach under the FRP floor and grabbed the
beam and I came out with a hand full of heavy rust flakes so I passed on
that boat.
It appears that there is a large market for your SS beams if all the
saltwater Cals are in the same shape.
My CSY, with a keel stepped mast, had a wooden mast step anchored to the
hull and keel with wooden beams and FRP tabbing.
The previous owners must have allowed the bilge water to rise above these
beams and the tabbing trapped the water.
All the wood was totally rotten and I am in the process of replacing it
with locust and epoxy and fibreglass.
I gues all old boats have their individual problems.
