water pressure pumps

Has anyone replaced their water pressure pump recently? If so what
type of pump did you go with and how has it performed? Does anyone
have experience with the new Variable Speed pumps?
The water pressure pump on my 1984 Cal 35 is acting up and I am
thinking about replacing it instead of just rebuilding it. I read a
2003 review in Practical Sailor that indicates there have been some
advancements in pump technology that might make it worthwhile to go
with a new pump.
Thanks for any insights you can provide.

I rebuilt mine - i.e. buying only the diaphram impeler and the new one had the advances already on it - it was much cheaper than buying a brand new one

Our Cal 33 1987 pump gave it up about a year and a half ago. After reading
the PS article, I started shopping for the sureflow model (median priced).
One of the lowest prices was a RV dealer where the membership was required
to get the "special on-line price". I was able to go to the local RV store
and order the same pump for almost the same price including shipping.
Somewhere the pump order was lost, they actually pulled the premium pump off
the shelf and sold it to me at the same price, a $150 off list price! This
new pump is awesome, 5+ GPM, enough pressure to run the shower and galley
sink at the same time! And quiet! I relocated the new pump to an added
bracing under the sink, isolated the board and the pump from the cabinet
sides where the original was located.
Now the only issue is water usage, with the new pump, high pressure flow, we
can drain the tanks in a weekend. When you think about it, at 5 GPM it will
only take 15 minutes to flush the water down the drains. Water conservation
becomes critical.
YMMV
