Looked at this as soon as it was up. It is beyond being a wreck. I figure
you are looking at roughly a grand to get it in condition again, assuming
the sails and running and standing rigging are still useable (which I
doubt). The trailer is worth about $350. So let's say you get lucky and put
in $1000 and pay $850 for the boat. You might actually sell it (after full
reconditioning) in a place where they race these great little boats for as
much as $2500. Figuring you are looking at two hundred hours of labor plus
tool wear and tear and expendables, you probably can't even break even on
this one. It had better be a labor of love.
There's a really nice one listed on Yacht World, though.
I think this one should be a pass.

Well, just for fun, I'll dissent. For one thing, the boat was at $237
when I looked. If you want a nice small boat that's versatile and
sturdy, you can't beat a Cal 20. If you are willing to do some work, to
invest some sweat equity, this might be an opportunity to sail
inexpensively.
The real variable is condition. The photos make it look as though the
interior had been flooded. I'd wonder how long, and make sure that all
the interior joinery hadn't turned to mush.
The photos also show a white bottom, which looks like bare gelcoat, and
suggests that the boat may have been dry-sailed. Not having to remove
decades of old bottom paint would be a plus, and in addition, you could
easily barrier-coat to protect against future problems.
I'd hate to see one of these fine little boats ignored and cut up for
the landfill, if she's capable of restoration. They aren't making 'em
anymore, so we need to save the ones that are usable.
I have reached that age at which I start griping about the modern
world. Nothing bothers me more than the folks who use the price of a 55
foot Bene-Hun-Lina with 6 heads, 8 berths, and gourmet galley to lament
the high cost of sailing. For years, people have been happily sailing
about in small vessels without microwave ovens or inverters or pressure
hot water showers. People like me who fall at the cheapskate end of the
spectrum can be sailors by purchasing used boats and getting our hands
dirty and muscles tired by improving the boats. While others are
turning pages in the boat magazines, salivating over multi-electronic
nav stations and calculating how many decades in the future it will be
before they can own a boat, I'm out on the Bay, sailing.
If the Cal 20 on eBay isn't badly deteriorated in structure, it might be
an opportunity for some impecunious sailor to get out on the water and
have fun.
Now, if I could just figure out why it's sitting backwards on that
trailer....

No lead in a Cal 20--keel is iron. Dunno scrap price on iron these
days, but I did pay for the floor mats for my new truck with the "mixed"
scrap metal from my Mom's basement (steel, copper, aluminum). It
surprised me how much it was worth.

Re: Cal 20 on Ebay - I would check her
floodtide20012006-06-22 16:13
Hi, I live not far from where this Cal 20 is located. I have a Cal 20
(hull number 712) so am not interested myself, but, like others, would
hate to see this boat junked if it can be restored.
If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested, I would volunteer to drive up to
Longmont and have a look at the boat. I am not a professional
surveyor, but besides my Cal have owned about a dozen fiberglass boats
over the years so have some expertise. No charge to do this, BUT I
want anyone asking me to check it out to be serious.
