Hi, All. Are there airline restrictions on baggage containing automatically inflating PFDs (i.e., they have inflation cartridges)? Cheers Charlie

As others have said, each airline sets their own policy. I can tell you that I've put my inflatable sospenders plus 2 Co2 carts (carts un-installed and on top, in a baggie, with a note explaining what they're for) in my checked baggage twice, once on Alaskan from SFO to Cabo, and once from San Diego to SFO on Alaskan. I also had a leatherman multi-tool and my old air force air crew knife, which lives on the webbing of my sospenders, in the same checked bag. Both times the bags were opened for inspection at some point (they put a note in the bag to tell you they opened it), and everything made it through OK. My feeling is, some day they may confiscate the carts, but I can live with that, I can usually borrow one from wherever I'm going. Haven't had to worry about it yet. bw From: "Husar Charlie" <hu… [at] bah.com> To: <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 11:01 AM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Inflatable PFDs > Hi, All. Hi Charlie, I recently purchased some nice sailing vests back in May when overseas that I had to have due to the price and after carefully studying this site... http://www.ussailing.org/safety/pfds_and_faa.htm I purchased them. After boarding the aircraft in one country without any such problem, I then hit a snag. With patience, proper paperwork, and sticky to my guns in explaining the regulations to three seperate security people that I was allowed 2 vests (installed) + 2 spare cylinders and the fact that every passenger is sitting on one of these cylinders, they let me take it on carry-on. Every airline is different, so check their rules first. Also make sure you declare the hazardous material before they x-ray your bags! I said, "I'm required to declare that I have inflatable lift vests." Then produce the documents for reference. Don't call the cylinders "hazardous" as they do in the regs. I figured worst case I would keep the vests and loose the cylinders rather than loose everything in my checked baggage. The price was still in my favor. Good luck!
