YES!!!
HIP, HIP, HIP, HOOORAY! FOR our Stalwart and Salty Captain dEmo (that's his real name, not a nic name..heh heh) and his stout Cal 40.
Modified? Looks like a fine set of sails on her. Is it the orange stripe that sets her apart? What modifications? Taller mast? Me thinks that be it.
Of course, deep respects for the single handers who did the race, one gent is 77 years young and has done many of these races. I followed the race on Latitude 38 on the net. But I bet there was dedicated website?
I
My idea of a huge distance race is Marina del Rey to San Diego, which we had to abandon when our outboard prob bushing repair failed 100 yds from the dock. Phooey, and we had a good shot at the down the coast trophy, after our success on the first leg, from Channel Islands to Marina del Rey, they had great following winds all night!
I hear tell most of the fleet was in by early afternoon on Sunday.
I made up for it by doing the Queen Mary Race the following weekend, sponsored by Redondo YC and Shorline YC. It was fun but we suffered from the long windward beat to get around the Palos Verdes R-10 buoy...next time we'll stay outside the point to avoid the dead spot and sloppy seas. We came in third (out of four boats in our class...even then, we had to protest an erroneous DSQ!!)

They have a double spreader rig and have moved chain plates inboard a
bit to compensate. That is the only modification I'm aware of. I
can't recall if he has also gone up on the mast height. I thought
about that when I ordered the new rig but elected to stay with the
traditional rig. Moving chain plates would require changes in the
whole beam to tie rod rig, too. Change the geometry a bit. I'm sure
Roger could comment on that.

California Girl's "I" is 48.4, whereas the stock Cal-40's measure at about
46.3.
Aesthetically, it's a very attractive height.
