twisting mainsheet
Chris Campbell2006-07-21 20:16 UTC
Listoids:
This is a Cal 20 question. The standard mainsheet arrangement has two
blocks, one on either side of the cockpit aft. The mainsheet goes up to
the boom end block and over, down to the other side, and up and back
again. The blocks are on swivels.
Somehow, my sheet gets twisted, and as I come about, one block swivels
so the two parts of the mainsheet twist around each other. This is a
fairly high-friction sheet arrangement to start with, and when two
passing parts of the line twist around each other, it's really sticky.
I keep un-reeving the sheet and un-twisting the sheet, and it keeps
twisting again.
At first, I thought it was because I was coiling the sheet when moored.
Now I figure-8 the bitter end of the sheet but it still ends up
twisted. I'm using double-braid, Sta-Set as I recall.
What's the curse here?

Don't know the cure but I had the same problem when I experimented with a
two part boom vang system. It was also Sta Set double braid.
